Apparently even Chris Matthews has his limits when it comes to swallowing Dem BS. The proof came tonight, when Matthews clearly wasn't buying Al Sharpton's transparently lame defense of Hillary Clinton's allegation, at an MLK Day event, that "the House of Representatives has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about."
Sharpton's theater of the absurd reached its apotheosis when he claimed that Hillary "did not make the comments at a Harlem church". Even the New york Times had to admit that she had spoken in "at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem," and Hardball rolled footage of her speaking at a lectern in the church draped with fabric decorated with a cross.
Responded Matthews, not even attempting to suppress an amused look: "You're kidding me, Reverend. I don't understand why you're defending her. Do you think she would have used that word with a Jewish group, an Italian group? She used that phrase, 'you know what I'm talking about.' What's that supposed to mean? She was pandering."
For what it's worth, in the following segment, MSNBC reporter Norah O'Donnell, who had spoken with people in the Hillary camp, gave conflicting indications on the fall-out. On the one hand, O'Donnell said that Hillary is not going to "walk away" from her plantation statement. On the other hand, Norah said Hillary will have to "clean-up" her remarks.
I even noticed that Hillary spoke with her version of a Southern accent when she made the "plantation" statement. What a pandering piece of work she is.
"speaking at a lectern in the church draped with fabric decorated with a cross...."
Sounds like a clear violation of the separation of church and state to me. Where is the ACLU when you need it?
Well, she is the Former First Black First Lady, so doesn't that give her justification to play the race card and pretend her audience 'knows what she means'?
Oh my!
She'll get a pass.
waiting for the aclu and barry lynn to call for a church and state investigation nottttttttttt
Where is the IRS when you need it? The FEC?
Excellent analysis, IMO. I suppose they might figure things out before election day, though, in the same way that Dems realized that Dean would be a disaster and dumped him in the primaries in favor of Kerry.
Her speaking voice when giving a speech is a huge turnoff to me..What she said was way over the top. I just cannot believe dems want to make her the President.
Interestingly, Stephen Hayes of the Weekly Standard, on with Norah, expressed the same opinion.
why is he attacking/critizing Sharpton; has he (Chrissy :) said " anything nasty" about Shrillary (the subtance of the) whole speech while at the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem? ...and what about the church's tax-free status?
I accept that he has a few lucid moments. And during those moments, I appreciate his comments and insight.
But then when it passes by, then I figure what wild eyed argument do I want to hear now? Sometimes it's good viewing, and sometimes it's just buffoonery.
....with the world's worst memory....
I don't recall
I have no recollection of that.
I really don't recall.
Can't wait for 2008!
Hillbilly later in the day said she wanted to reach out to those who have Confederate Flags attached to the beds of their pick up truck....OHHHHHH SORRY HILLBILLY.. That was Howard Dean in the Last Presidential Election.
FYI BTTT !
But we're used to Liberals getting a pass on making blatantly racist statements.
Ping.
truth
Sad but true. Ron Christie, a black former Bush aide who was on with Sharpton, made a point along those lines, to the effect that a Republican would have been raked over the coals for saying something similar, and if I recall correctly Matthews seconded the notion.
