Glum Democrats Can't See Halting Bush on Courts
New York Times ^ | 01/14/2006 | Adam Nagourney, Richard W. Stevenson, Neil A. Lewis

Posted on 01/15/2006 7:08:47 AM PST by KCRW

Disheartened by the administration's success with the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr., Democratic leaders say that President Bush is putting an enduring conservative ideological imprint on the nation's judiciary, and that they see little hope of holding off the tide without winning back control of the Senate or the White House.

In interviews, Democrats said the lesson of the Alito hearings was that this White House could put on the bench almost any qualified candidate, even one whom Democrats consider to be ideologically out of step with the country.

That conclusion amounts to a repudiation of a central part of a strategy Senate Democrats settled on years ago in a private retreat where they discussed how to fight a Bush White House effort to recast the judiciary: to argue against otherwise qualified candidates by saying they would take the courts too far to the right.

Apparently, the Democrats are just now figuring out that they did not win the 2004 elections.

It's really hard to understand that an anti-American pro anything that is vile party doesn't win more elections in the U.S. Well, it is for the democrats.

It's odd to have the Dems finally agree with us on something.

Well, yeah. The Dems shouldn't forget that it was to a great degree Conservatives who objected to a yes-person, not a qualified jurist (Harriet what's her name) being his choice before this.

If they had clamored for quality when it was appropriate, they maybe wouldn't be a joke now.

Don't know what they are so glum about. This is nothing more than the will of the people being expressed through their elected executive and representatives.

Someday they may get another anti-American hack into office and we'll be inflicted with more ACLU lawyers on the bench.

What an idiotic statement.

Given the last few election cycles the dems should be wondering if they are the ones that are ideologically out of step with the country.

I was looking through some 'progressive' blogs linked at memeorandum last week. It's like an alternate universe. They still think they can stop Alito's confirmation.

"If only" the Democrats and the media would get on board.

Perhaps it's a cynical scam to gin up financial contributions to a non-existent "effort".

Election results are obvious, but Dems know that once they lose control over the courts, their agenda can not only be stopped but actually reversed. The smell of dead Democrats is the whiff of victory.

They would have had their chance with Harriet Myers. Unfortunately for them, however, there are few people in this country more qualified for a spot on the Supreme Court bench than Judge Alito. They'll just have to live with it.

Let's just hope that the Pres has a chance to name at least one more to the Supreme Court before the end of his term....

A very good article. Very well written, very easy to read, very informative...despite the obvious bias of the authors. What good journalism should look like.

The New York Times said: "even one whom Democrats consider to be ideologically out of step with the country"

What the Times and the democrats do not say is that they are outside the main steam of the United States. They are fare left-wing fascist who the American People despise and would put under their heel if possible.

Hindsight is always clearer than when we're in the thick of things. GWB has played rope-a-dope on the RATS time and again.

With Harriet Miers I think he played rope-a-dope on conservatives, to make them think he really wanted her on the bench. What he was judging was the conservatives dedication to a truly qualified Justice. I think he was looking for the outcome he got.

To see another (unrelated) rope-a-dope strategy he's used click here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1558342/posts?page=12#12

Dems who normally are critical of religious people must be praying for the good health of Justice Stevens. They surely are hoping he hangs around til after GWB is gone. If the next president is also a Republican though, you will see the Dems be more than just glum.
