NYT: After Alito's Testimony, Democrats Still Dislike Him but Can't Stop Him
New York Times ^ | January 13, 2006 | ADAM NAGOURNEY and NEIL A. LEWIS

Posted on 01/12/2006 10:14:58 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. completed his testimony at his Supreme Court confirmation hearings on Thursday to a blast of opposition from Democrats, who signaled they would not support him. They also indicated, however, that they saw little chance of blocking his confirmation, even with a filibuster.

Several Democratic senators on the Judiciary Committee took the step of announcing, as Judge Alito sat before them, that they had been alienated by his 18 hours of testimony, which left them with doubts about his credibility, as well as deep concern about his record on abortion rights and his views on the White House's effort to expand the definition of executive power.

It seemed clear that Judge Alito, in contrast to John G. Roberts Jr., will draw few if any Democratic votes in the committee, and when his nomination goes to the full Senate.

"As your testimony in these hearings come to a close, I just have to tell you that I remain very troubled, not by anything in your personal history, so much as by your judicial views," said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York. "Unfortunately, by refusing to confront our questions directly and by giving us responses that really don't illuminate how you really think, as opposed to real answers, many of us have no choice but to conclude that you still embrace those views completely or in large part."

The committee's ranking Democrat, Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, said after the hearing, "I continue to be worried - and I pressed the questions again today as I have all week long - he is not clear that he would serve to protect America's fundamental rights."

In my mind just one word describes senator Leahy, 'THICKHEAD'.

.....I just have to tell you that I remain very troubled, not by anything in your personal history, so much as by your judicial views," said Senator Charles E. Schumer.....

That statement is in effect a testimony to the fact there will be a good conservative on the court.

If Schumer is irritated, things are right with the world.

I love this!

I'm going to quote a well known socialist from the dark days of the 60's

"And that's the way it is"......our old buddy Walter Cronkite. I just love shoving their own words in their face, it's justice looong denied.

On another conservative website, this DiFi picture is captioned with the words...

"IT'S OVER."

LOL

Yours is quite pithy, too.

Let's put fat teddy up on the hot seat and have him explain that little incident at Chappaquidick....how dare he question ANY one else's integrity when HE should be in prison sharing a cell with big Buford!

Judge Alito should be commended for keeping his cool while answering the questions that these hyenas were throwing at him. If it were me I would have answered Teddy with, "Senator Kennedy, I don't recall very much about this CAP organization but I do recall driving off of a bridge in Chappiquiddick in the 1960's. I was drunk at the time and a lady passenger of mine drowned because I did not help her. Does that disqualify me from holding a high office in the United States sir?"

Ted Kennedy, like most Democrats, has a moral deficit and is bankrupt when it comes to integrity.
Same stands true for the posters over in DUmmie land, who are so far away from reality it is doubtful they will ever find their way back. DUmmies cannot believe their party can't stop Alito from sitting on the Supreme Court because they can not come to grips with the fact that they lost the Presidency, Senate, House and are a minority.

You focused on details given in the example and over looked the main point that was being made.

Major difference: Alito never served a right-wing organization so far out there as to be despised by the majority of the American people. Alito was more qualified (by a bit) and less radical (by a mile) than Ginsberg.

This is a very, very important point.

We continue to allow the Left to define "mainstream" by responding to attacks against Alito, Roberts, Brown, Luttig, etc by DENYING that they are out of the mainstream, rather than by ATTACKING the far-Left loonies who dominatet the courts and the process.

THEY are the ones who are out of the mainstream. RBG was and is an extremist radical. That she was not attacked mercilessly is inexcusable.

Wait until he's sworn in before you declare victory.

I think they are completely clueless as to how much damage they did to themselves.

You may very well be right on that, which is exactly why we should not even consider changing the current methods.

If you look at my profile, you will see that it was the Bork hearings that was my main catalyst in totally abandoning the Democratic Party. I have received numerous comments from others saying the same thing. I am also certain that many other middle of the road'ers have seen what they have done to Alito and also decided to abandon the Dems.

Wait until he's sworn in before you declare victory.

Wait until he casts his first votes as a Justice before you declare victory. Remember Souter was sold as a "conservative." So too, for that matter, was Sandra Day O'Connor. I like this guy, so far. But I'm going to watch him.

People just wanted to learn about Alito and they are dismayed at this.

They should be. The buffoons have finally been exposed to the world for what they really are.

If that is the published headline I LOVE it.

The average American probably found Alito very likable. I know that is not how it is meant, but that is how it will be perceived by headline scanners.

Just one more wedge between the Dems and the American people.

No, I didn't look at what those people were wearing. I was looking for some sentient capacity in them- self-awareness. They could stroll around sloppily nude and be the same bunch of douche-bags.

I hope Jesus takes me to Heaven some day. Hell would be hanging around with those people every day. They are disgraceful in their jobs to begin with.

"The average American probably found Alito very likable.

That's very true. On the reverse side, the average American probably found the democrat senators very unlikeable. Men will never bring a woman to tears intentionally. It's abnormal.

"The buffoons have finally been exposed to the world for what they really are."

They won't get the message until people laugh at them.

Frist needs to put the whole senate into executive session. He needs to remind them all that they are Senators of the U.S. and are expected to behave responsibly. Robert Byrd may back him up with this. Surprisingly, he may be the only rat that respects the senate as an "institution".
