N.O. residents angry about rebuilding ideas

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Angry residents vented frustration Wednesday at the debut of rebuilding proposals for this devastated city, with some vowing to defend their land from possible government buyouts and others saying the city needs to get out of their way and let them rebuild.

The proposed rebuilding plan caused so much anger in part because it suggests a moratorium on new building permits in areas heavily flooded by Hurricane Katrina on Aug. 29, such as parts of the Ninth Ward, Lakeview and East New Orleans.

"Our neighborhood is ready to come home," said Jeb Bruneau of the Lakeview neighborhood, which borders Lake Pontchartrain. "Don't get in our way and prevent us from doing that. Help us cut the red tape."

At times the meeting became acrimonious, with one angry Lower Ninth Ward resident, Harvey Bender, pointing his finger at members of the Bring New Orleans Back Commission and accusing Joseph Canizaro, the urban planning committee chairman and a prominent New Orleans developer, of plotting to take land from people.

"I don't know you, but Mr. Canizaro, I hate you," Bender said. "You've been in the background scheming to take our land." Another resident, Caroline Parker, said: "I don't think it's right that you take our properties. Over my dead body."

not really enough information in the article to make a judgement...but if the residents want to rebuild in a flood risk area then they need to assume the responsibility for another disaster...hard to tell who is right in this given the overall corruption in N.O.

Let's dig even deeper then. Make the new city a mile below sea level, and charge the whole project to taxpayers.

That's exactly what they are doing anyhow... What's a mile of water vs. ten feet, after it floods your property? There's no difference.

Our esteemed governor is currently in the Netherlands to learn about their systems of levees and dikes. I expect her to announce a new tax on homosexual females when she returns.

Dade County Codes and respect for designated flood zones (i.e. stilts, wash throughs, breakaway walls, impact resistant glass, tie downs, etc.).

No way these people should be allowed to rebuild there.

They should be given a choice: Accept a buyout, or not receive any aid at all and let them stay where they are and do what they want after they sign a waiver that would clear the local and federal government of any financial liability, culpability or responsibility.

And that includes rescue by helicopter or boat.

Well, I'm sorry - but the leftists that you have sent to Congress and State have insisted that "proper channels" be followed. These channels take time - sometimes years. The Bush Administration wanted to cut the amount of time, but a MSM smear campaign put the cabosh to that.

You losers put these people in power and are working to keep them there vis a vie your votes, now be happy.

"with some vowing to defend their land from possible government buyouts"

I say let them win- don't offer them a dime and let them live in mold-infested shacks with no electricity if that's what they want.

[The proposed rebuilding plan caused so much anger in part because it suggests a moratorium on new building permits in areas heavily flooded by Hurricane Katrina on Aug. 29, such as parts of the Ninth Ward, Lakeview and East New Orleans.]

Are these the people who think it's great when the government tells people you can't smoke indoors (for your safety), you have to wear a stabled or you'll be fined (for your safety), you need to have warning labels on every thing you buy (for your safety) reminding you of all the ways you're not supposed to hurt yourself with simple household items, and who think it's the government's greatest responsibility to keep every man, woman and child in America safe from all hazards large and small?

But when the government actually does something for public safety that it is legitimately supposed to do, like preventing people from building homes below sea level on the same spot where their old homes were washed away by a hurricane a few months before, these same people scream and cry that the big, bad government is picking on them.

I give up.

You know, if Katrina just happened to make a direct hit on New Orleans instead of turning and sparing New Orleans, we as a nation would be looking for grave space for more then 30K people.

Think about it, your hunkered down in your house which is below the Levy system by several feet. And a storm surge that is 14 feet higher then the Levy comes in and in seconds everything around you is under water and probably debris churning in the storm surge.

I think if this had actually happened, people would not even be considering moving back into New Orleans. God spared the people of NO once, I don't think I would want to tempt fate a second time.

I'm so sick of hearing from the whining crybabies in NOLA.

Move. Go away. Live someplace else that's civilized and safer.

"No way these people should be allowed to rebuild there."

Exactly right. They should be given a buyout and then flee to higher ground. But the taxpayers of America should not buy their land, let the city of NOLA or the state buy it out...

BUAAAAAAAAAHAHAH. What insurance company will cover their rebuild anyway? No one.

They don't need insurance. WE will rebuild for them over and over and over.

Personally, I would have ZERO involvement in this issue. The mayor and the governor are clueless. The former residents? Send F'em Kerry to sort it out.
