Michael Medved: Top-money makers explode myths
Jewish World Review ^ | 1/10/06 | Michael Medved

Posted on 01/10/2006 1:35:43 PM PST by Caleb1411

The list of top movie money-makers for 2005 exposes enduring misunderstandings about American entertainment.

Among the fifteen most popular films, only one — number five, "Weddings Crashers" — was rated "R," and none of them was even vaguely controversial.

The biggest blockbusters — "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," "Narnia," —hardly explored edgy approaches to sex or politics.

Meanwhile, the radically different list of top Oscar contenders is dominated by adults-only, controversial fare, with "Brokeback Mountain," "Munich," "Syriana," "Good Night and Good Luck," "Capote," and "Transamerica" leading the way.

The movie establishment honors precisely those releases that fail to connect with mainstream audiences: edgy message movies from a liberal perspective.

Year after year, show business bases its most significant accolades on politically correct posturing rather than popularity, so it's high time to drop the stupid myth that says "Hollywood cares only about the financial bottom line."

Nice post. Medved is right. That thing on the silver screen is only a movie. It's about entertainment. Most moviegoers don't want lectures; they want to enjoy themselves for a an hour or so.

In any other industry, marketing that shot so wide of the target would be grounds for some herd-thinning. But in Hollywood, the Marxists running the film biz are determined to push their message, whatever the cost.

The answer is for stockholders to fire these studio heads, and to ensure that none of them is ever allowed near a creative venue again.

Not only could this clue be derived from the top 5 movies of 2005, but if one looks at the top 100 grossing movies of all time one is struck by the lack of R rated movies. As I recall, the highest grossing R rated movie was Passion of the Christ.

Meanwhile, the radically different list of top Oscar contenders is dominated by adults-only, controversial fare, with "Brokeback Mountain," "Munich," "Syriana," "Good Night and Good Luck," "Capote," and "Transamerica" leading the way.

As for these movies, Brokeback Mountain - Gay shepards...no thanks. Munich - PC moral equivalence flick...no thanks. Syriana - Rewrite of reality...no thanks. Good Night and Good Luck - historically inaccurate and/or outright false...no thanks. Capote - overrated gay writer...don't care. Transamerica - not familiar with this one.

So the problem with the movies is Hollywood has a problem dealing accurately with the facts when dealing with real life and historical topics and they seem to believe that the couple of percent of population that is gay will spend enough to make their movies blockbusters...that doesn't seem rational either.

Agreed. My guess is that if the Leftists and the Pink Mafia were removed from power, there would likely be a new Golden Age of movies. I suspect there's a lot of pent-up creativity which is not allowed to see the light of day because it doesn't fit the narrow confines of the current Agenda.

A little off topic, but I just started listening to Michael Medved recently. At first I didn't "get" his deadpan and rather sedate style, but after listening for a few weeks the Medved show has become one of my favorites. Mike is a good interviewer, doesn't let snide little jabs go by unanswered, and is good at simply laying the chips out and letting his listeners decide on the truth. I encourage others to give him a try.

There'll be such poignant weeping and gnashing of teeth at Cannes. As the late Steve Allen was wont to say of today's "entertainment," it's "vulgarians entertaining barbarians."

Hopefully the same will happen to Hollywood as did to the Soviet Union...they went bankrupt.

I like him too. Unfortunately, he left XM Radio soon after I subscribed, so I only got to enjoy him for a couple of weeks.

I'll be listening to him on my way home today.

Go see "Narnia" and that penguin film, and ignore the rest.

Think I'll skip the Oscars Show this year.

Why watch?

Networks won't like a lot of folks tuning out.  In a couple of years the Oscars can join Trump's Miss America Pageant on the Country Music Channel.

A meaningless argument. Popularity is not equivalent to quality -- and there is good reason to suspect that the two are inversely correlated.

There are legitimate criticisms of Hollywood, but Medved has yet to stumble upon them.

Boy ain't that the truth. There's a Hollyweird "pink list" in effect. And if you ain't on the list, you ain't getting anywhere. Rule 1: You must be a homo suck-up.

So, the conclusion - pretty much every top oscar contender is a bunch of filthy trite trash. Welcome to alice in wonderland, where the bad becomes the good. All I can picture, is a roomful of old queens conspiring to nominate anything that will promote the gay agenda. Has nothing to do with America, really.........

I agree. Michael is really a great interviewer. My only complaint, and one of the things that makes me turn him off now and then, is that he lets stupid liberals have a little too much time on his show. A little bit of them goes a l-o-n-g way, and IMO, Michael overdoes it.
