A nephew of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. set fire to his own apartment in an apparent suicide attempt.
Derek King, 46, sought mental health counseling after Tuesday's blaze, said Bob Bowser, deputy chief of the Lawrence Police Department.
Bowser said Derek King endangered the lives of himself and others when he allegedly set the fire in his apartment, and then refused to leave when rescuers arrived.
"It could have been a tragedy,"
Arson investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set, and Bowser said King could face charges.
Rev. Thomas L. Brown, pastor at Ebenezer Missionary, said he believed the fire was an accident and the alleged suicide attempt a misunderstanding.

.....Rev. Thomas L. Brown, pastor at Ebenezer Missionary, said he believed the fire was an accident and the alleged suicide attempt a misunderstanding.......
OK, so what was it?? Do we have a perp setting fire to a building, or do we have a F'ed up perp setting fire to a building???
But he's black so he gets a "get a out of jail free card", regardless.
In either case, it's Bush's fault for not calling off the Civil War: too much spying, doncha know!
The family has "mismanaged" the finances to a degree the place is a shambles.
I believe the nation moved too fast to declare MLK a near "saint", designate government Holidays, rename streets, schools and parks all over the country --- while at the same time working to remove the names of dead old white men's names from these same places.....
Dead old white men like Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Robert E. Lee.........etc, etc.....

I've fought fires since the seventies. Burning to death sucks. Of course, the best way in the world to die still sucks. If I was going to off myself, though, I'd probably try to do it by old age.
Burning drugs evidence?
Yeah, 1964 was a pretty full year.
That's been my plan, but it hasn't turned out to be as easy as I thought.
No, that's WHY he tried to kill himself. Somebody must have found him a job.

Could? COULD?
If I committed this arson crime my fanny would be grass in a heartbeat.......and I'd be writing this billet doux from the Graybar Hotel in beautiful downtown Indianapolis.

We Shall Overmedicate.
Given the King Foundation's penchant for suing eveyone in sight, the title should probably read,
MLK® Nephew Sets Fire to His Own Apartment
Remember the environmentalist who killed himself recently, in a jail cell?
He used a plastic bag...by himself.
I am not sure how that all worked. But he is dead.
