Creationists say fossil discoveries back their theories
THE ORLANDO SENTINEL ^ | Jan. 07, 2006 | Jim Stratton

Most paleontologists look into the mouth of an allosaurus and see a prehistoric eating machine with a jaw full of flesh-tearing teeth.

Peter DeRosa peers into that mouth and sees the hand of God.

Working from a business park about 80 miles north of Tampa, Fla., DeRosa and his family are hammering away at two bedrock principles of modern science: evolution and the notion that Earth is about 4 billion years old.

The DeRosas are part of a small but growing band of creationists using dinosaurs - the icons of an ancient Earth - to argue that the world is only 6,000 years old. The DeRosas' tool of choice? The fossilized bones of Ebenezer the allosaurus and other creatures cramming their makeshift laboratory.

"It's very clear in Scripture. God's word is true," said DeRosa, 22.

"Everything we've found supports that." The DeRosas run Creation Expeditions, a ministry that relies on dinosaurs to spread what they say is the infallible word of the Bible.

The family operation includes Peter, his brother Mark, sister Leah, and parents Pete and Linda.

The DeRosas have no formal training but have studied dinosaurs and fossils for more than a decade. .......... The DeRosas' digs have produced impressive results. They have uncovered a 22-foot-long allosaurus - a smaller relative of the T. rex - and a 15-foot-tall edmontosaurus, a plant-eating, duck-billed dinosaur.

The DeRosas and their movement, in essence, are trying to turn science against itself.

By digging up fossils and interpreting their finds, some creationists hope to convince others that evolution and a 4-billion-year-old Earth are nonsensical notions unsupported by the data.

They maintain, for example, that they've found organic plant matter buried with fossils indicating the animals died only a few thousand years ago.

I am a combination of an Old Earth Creationist and a theistic evolutionist, so I don't buy the young Earth theory.

Old Earth creationism makes so much more sense.

Moron alert.

Unnecessary, and not at all fair. Indeed, from the article, I have to conclude that the DeRosas are sincere, and they are admirable in both their persistence and their hard work. While I think they are scientifically wrong, it looks like they are getting their hands dirty doing work in the field, and not just quote-mining or nitpicking at the written work of others while sipping soda in their la-z-boys.

You Christian compassion is warming considering you've condemned me to Hell....

Me!?

I think you'd best look inside the cover of the Book to see who the Author is!

My compassion is telling you the Truth.

Your intelligence will show if you accept it.

Hebrews 2
1. We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
2. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,
3. how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

Pretty much sums up the qualifications of the scientific illiterate.

every time I read an Evo post on one of these threads I am reminded of the Italian in the battle of wits in Princess Bride.

When the argument finally ended he lost of course, but the battle of wits was a hoot!

I think you mean "imply". But many people definitely "infer" it when they read the Bible. It IS possible, of course, that the earth is only 6,000 years old. But if He created it outside the normal physical laws under which we currently live, there would be no way to prove or disprove it.

no formal training

This means they did not get indoctrinated at a university where the religious orthodoxy of naturalism is strictly enforced. They join the ranks of others you might like to disparage like Newton.

A PhD from a God hating university is not part of the scientific method, but it is part of the "science" communities - send us your taxes we need more grant money to keep telling you guys we are smart ones approach

No, it means they didn't take the time to learn the fundamentals of science and then to work and learn about the science that they are currently pretending to know for $500 a shot.

And don't give me the "God hating university" crap, it makes you look like a kooky zealot.

These guys don't want to learn, they had their conclusions first, then built their "study" around that conclusion, forget the scientific method.

The DeRosas were home schooled and have had more paleontological finds than most ivory tower grant requesters do in a lifetime. These brothers have spent more time studying the classic scientific method than they would have in a God hating University.

and don't give me the "God hating university" crap, it makes you look like a kooky zealot.

I do not care how I look - the University has become the most intolerant place in America to God. In the bio dept they begin with the presupposition of no god and then mock those who would disagree - and I am the zealot?

When the facts don't support your view - by all means resort to name calling.

These scammers remind me of the famous "Dr. Dino" Kent Hovind, the tax cheat. But, Dr. Hovind went to a great university:

You have no facts, just faith, which is fine, keep it in your church and not in science.

The DeRosas sound like master scammers, luring in the weak minded luddites for $500 a pop!

By all means, give them your money!

I know in my heart God created the heavens and the earth, but I just never understood the necessity of trying to stick it within 6,000 years.

The idea that creation was 6,000 years ago comes from Bishop James Ussher of the Church of Ireland. In 1650 he added up the ages of the patriarchs in the "begats" and published a book called "Annals of the Old Testament" in which he stated that the earth was created at midday on 23 October 4004 BC.

Now, those who claim the earth was created about 6,000 years ago (4,004 + 2,006 = 6,010) apparently don't know where that idea came from.
