With O’Reilly as Guest, Very Serious Letterman Denounces Iraq War & Hails Sheehan
NewsBusters ^ | January 3, 2006 | Brent Baker

Posted on 01/03/2006 9:20:35 PM PST by PJ-Comix

Displaying a hostility to President Bush and the Iraq war similar to that expressed by Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart, on tonight’s Late Show David Letterman will go further than I’ve ever heard him in revealing his derision for President Bush’s decision to launch the Iraq war. I know this thanks to the “Big Show Highlight," a two-minute streaming-only RealPlayer preview of tonight’s program, which is now featured on the Late Show’s home page.

In the posted clip, Letterman mockingly tells guest Bill O’Reilly: "The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?" Letterman demands: “Why the Hell are we there to begin with?" When O’Reilly points out that the British, Russians and Egyptians also presumed Iraq had WMD, Letterman retorts: “Well then that makes it all right?" Turning unusually serious, Letterman soon lectures: “I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ. Honest to Christ." That prompts O’Reilly to contend: “No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter' on my program." To which Letterman fires back: “I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap.” After the show airs in an hour, I will update this item with more from the Letterman/O’Reilly exchange, including a video clip. (Transcript of RealPlayer excerpt follows.)

It took me a while, but I managed to take down this transcript from the two-minute streaming RealPlayer “Big Show Highlight” video clip on the Late Show home page:

David Letterman: “The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?”

Bill O’Reilly: “No.”

Letterman: “No, it was the intelligence gathered by his administration.”

O’Reilly: “By the CIA.”

Letterman: “Yeah, so why are we there in the first place? I agree to you, with you that we have to support the troops. They are there, they are the best and the brightest of this country. [audience applause] There’s no doubt about that. And I also agree that now we’re in it it’s going to take a long, long time. People who expect it’s going to be solved and wrapped up in a couple of years, unrealistic, it’s not going to happen. However, however, that does not eliminate the legitimate speculation and concern and questioning of ‘Why the Hell are we there to begin with?’”

O’Reilly: “If you want to question that, and then re-vamp an intelligence agency that’s obviously flawed, the CIA, okay. But remember, MI-6 in Britain said the same thing. Putin’s people in Russia said the same thing, and so did Mubarak’s intelligence agency in Egypt.”

Letterman: “Well then that makes it all right?”

O’Reilly: “No it doesn’t make it right.”

Letterman: “That intelligence agencies across the board makes it alright that we’re there?”

O’Reilly: “It doesn’t make it right.”

Letterman: “See, I’m very concerned about people like yourself who don’t have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ.” [audience applause]

O’Reilly: “No, I’m sorry.”

Letterman: “Honest to Christ.”

“O’Reilly: “No way. [waits for applause to die down] No way you’re going to get me, no way that a terrorist who blows up women and children.”

Letterman: “Do you have children?”

O’Reilly: “Yes I do. I have a son the same age as yours. No way a terrorist who blows up women and children is going to be called a ‘freedom fighter’ on my program.” [mild audience applause]

Letterman: “I’m not smart enough to debate you point to point on this, but I have the feeling, I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap. [audience laughter] But I don’t know that for a fact. [more audience applause]

I wrote previously:

When this whole NSA business started up, Dave set up a bit by saying (to the best of my memory) that the President was wiretapping without warrants, but mentioning the purpose of trying to catch Al Qaida communications with American operatives. Then came a shot of Biff Henderson on a phone saying, "Hey, Bush! Mind your own f-BLEEP-ing business, dumbass!"
I meant, "WITHOUT mentioning the purpose of trying to catch Al Qaida communications with American operatives."

I only caught the last bit, but I thought Bill looked like the more composed one. Letterman came off as the hysterical red faced jerk. Doesn't he have heart problems. He better watch getting so flustered.

Thanks for the link. Letterman went in for the attack straight away. Wow, looks like I didn't miss much--O'Reilly wasn't on that long. I wonder if Letterman cut him short.

Letterman used to crack me up with his wit and irony, but it's old now, he's replaced wit with surliness, the irony with politics.

You are describing his life as a bachelor and as a married man. Happens to many of us, or at least I have heard.

You need to see the whole clip. Bill played his cards well and took the higher ground, but the hostile audience along with Dave's onslaught made him noticeably bothered during the beginning of the interview.

Bill even bashed bush in the beginning and once he realized that he did not win any points with him he got tougher with him and held his own just fine.

Oh you got to be kidding me. Okay, O'Reilly can be full of himself but he deserves more respect than that. That's disgusting. No wonder the audience was laughing whe O'Reilly said, "Is this mine?" and started drinking from it. Letterman is a pig.

O’Reilly 1, Letterman 0 (VIDEO)

When O’Reilly was finished speaking about how careful we should be with what we say about the war because it affects the troops, no one clapped. However after Letterman basically said the same thing as O’Reilly, the whole audience seemed to agree and clapped. As the interviewed progressed, O’Reilly seemed to be shutting down Letterman every time he spoke bad about the war — without any evidence to back his claims up — and therefore he attempted to change the subject. One time he said “lets go back to your little red and green argument”, referring to O’Reilly’s “War on Christmas”.

Letterman felt strong about “grieving mother” Cindy Sheehan, in fact at one point he said “Holy Christ, Holy Christ” when referring to O’Reilly’s disdain for her. However, Letterman eventually agreed with O’Reilly when the latter brought up Sheehan calling terrorists in Iraq, “freedom fighters”. By the end of the argument, Letterman became more friendlier with Bill O’Reilly when he knew that he lost the argument.

Just watched it. You are right. O'Reilly's voice seemed a little quivery at the beginning and I didn't like the part about going into Iraq being a total screw up. I'm not there, but I don't think that's the case. We've heard reports from plenty of military guys saying that things are going a lot better in most areas than is being reported.

He has fathered a "bastard" and will not marry the mother.

Letterman is a world class ass, but could we get off of the "he had a kid out of wedlock" kick. Lots of people do that - it doesn't make them bad people.

There are a multitude of things to bash Letterman about but this isn't a very good one.

Letterman is ignorant when it comes to politics. Bill tries to play both sides and looses credibility from all.

Yes, he tries to be Mr. Fair and Balanced but it comes across as more all over the map. At least with someone like a Franken you know he's going to be an a-hole all the time. O'Reilly is frustrating because sometimes he makes sense (like most of tonight's appearance) and then sometimes he's coming out of left field and you just want to puke.

What about cheney and bush and all the rest, besides the actual republican that actually served in Vietnam, Mccain, that everyone around here pisses all over?

Anyone who served in the military does get some bonus points in the eyes of most conservatives and those that did not lose a few points.

What is more important though, is what that person has done since that time. Some people that served in the military are idiots (McCain, Murtha) or all out traitors (Benedict Arnold).

Others that did not serve can distinguish themselves in other ways (Lincoln for example). Bush and Cheney have distinguished themselves in the eyes of conservatives and particularly to the military.

BTW, Bush did serve in the military - just not in the capacity that you wanted.

I agree with you. I think it matters as well. He's a typical liberal. Pretends like he cares about everyone in the world--Sheehan, the fallen soldiers, but then doesn't care enough about his own child to marry the mother. I don't know where my 3 year old comes up with some of his knowledge because I've never talked about marriage to him but he's asked me several times, "Are you married to dad?" "Are you still married to dad?" We are by no means perfect parents but hopefully we are already instilling in him that things are a certain way--there's an order to things--men and women get married and have kids.

Yep, Letterman came off as spiteful. Seemed to spit hate out without any facts. Wanted to blame the President for us being in Iraq like it was a bad thing.

What I don't get is how come even O'R doesn't mention that that Saddam while under sanctions was financing terror is Israel with homicide bombing?
Seems a dictator who pays for terrorism and who tried to take out a USA President while under UN sanctions should be removed from the Presidency.

What's the big deal about us being in Iraq that is a problem, I don't get this?

Just caught the Letterman segment out here...what an ignorant pompous jackass. The guy is a f'ing idiot...I know 12 year olds who are more intelligent and informed. That pig can go to hell!
Other than that I have no opinion.
