CHESAPEAKE - A 21-year-old Mormon missionary died Monday night after he and his partner were shot while going door-to-door in the Deep Creek area.
The other missionary, age 19, was in serious condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Monday night, Chesapeake police said.
Police did not release the victims’ identities.
According to police the two missionaries were walking in the 2600 block of Elkhart Street off George Washington Highway about 6 p.m. when they were approached by another man. The man shot them both and fled on foot.
One of the victims ran to The Charity House, a nearby nursing home, to seek help.
Police described the suspect as a black male, about 5’10’’ wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He was last seen heading toward Janice Lynn Court, which backs up to Elkhart.
The two missionaries had bicycles, but were not riding them at the time.
A group from the Mormon church, known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, waited in the consultation room at the Norfolk General emergency room Monday night. They declined to comment.
According to the church’s official web site there are more than 60,000 Mormon missionaries, mostly young men and women who volunteer to spread the church’s message for one and a half to two years all over the world, at their own expense.
There are apartment buildings at the end of Elkhart Street, and some residents could not leave or return to their homes for a time Monday night.
Police, working in a moderate rain, had the street blocked off a short way off George Washington Highway.
“This is close to home,’’ said resident Bobby Gatling. He has lived on the block for two years. “Nothing like this has ever happened here before.’’

Duh, old man...I said it was too bad Joseph Smith was murdered. I didn't say he deserved it.
Lynch mob is in YOUR history books - but not necessarily ALL history books. There are renditions of his murder that say Joseph Smith had a weapon (gun) inside the jail and fired at the mob. He was killed in the return fire.
In your history he was listening to Hyrum sing "A Poor Wayfaring Man"...when suddenly a frenzied mob opened fire on the jail. Jospeh Smith was struck with a ball during the attack - and fell from the second story of the jail.
Now tell me - why was a man sho was being fired upon standing at an open window??
Possible answer #1: To see the faces of the men that were going to kill him.
Possible and more probable answer #2: To return their fire.

I'm pretty sure this is what the mormon history says as well. I think most people call this self-defense. What do you think the mob was there for? Friendly conversation? They were singing when the mob arrived. The mob then opened fire on them. Joseph returned fire. He then ran to the window to draw fire away from his friends. He was then fatally shot.
Probable answer is that the mob was coming up the stairs. Hyrum was already dead.
Frankly, what difference would it make if Joseph had a weapon? The mob was not justified in essentially a multiple homicide.

His point was that there are bad apples in every group of people. You can't judge an entire group based on them. It's not the Baptist church, the mormon church, or their teachings that are responsible for these things, because I'm pretty sure the teachings of both are in strong opposition to them. I know the mormon church is. We get instructed quite clearly on this subject on a regular basis.
Things we live is not always objective?
Our personal experience can shade or cast a shadow on other things and we don't even recognized it.
I too have things in my growning years if I allowed could magnify and be out of proportion to ones surroundings!
BTW Temple marriage is not required for Salvation, it is exaltation which is not the same!
People are the same, some of us can even spell Baptist.

All of us know that child abuse is an abomination. Remember that the Lord taught that rather than abuse or molest a child you would be better off tying a mill stone around your neck and jumping into the lake. I agree with the Lord.

Please don't miss understand this question, but I would like to know how did you Quester arrived or know that the Bible is the Word of God ?
I studied ... I looked at the evidence ... I prayed ... I tested the Bible's claims ... I asked the Lord to guide me.
What the Lord has shown to me is given below ...
The Bible is a collection of the writings of over 40 different individuals across the span of some 5000 years.
Ancient copies of the original writings still exist (and can be examined today) ... and millions can see and read the actual Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic texts ... to see that any translation is accurate.
The compilation of the Bible is consistently evidenced in the world's history. It came forth from a people (the Jews) known in history ... and from places (Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, etc.) where we can still visit today.
Over the course of the more than 1500 years of the Bible's existence, not one person or group of persons has been successful in proving any part of the Bible to be untrue. Most strikingly, the fulfillment of the Bible's prophecy which has occurred has left scholars, wishing to disprove the Bible, with only the argument that the prophecies could not have been authored prior to the events pprophesied because of the complete and remarkable accuracy of the prophecy. In other words, these writings either have to be accurate prophecy or a complete fraud.
For me, ... the Bible paints an accurate picture of the world.
Men and women are born into sin.
Noone has to teach a child to lie.
In fact, we have to teach our children to do good, rather than evil.
More than anything, however, ... the Bible gives us the message that God loves us so much, that He was willing to allow His Only Begotten Son to taste death ... that we might come back home to Him.
I have lived with the Lord in my life and in my heart for almost 40 years, ... and He has been to me just what He said He would be ... from the very pages of the Bible.

Only the Atonement of Christ can save us, and we know that and acknowledge our total indebtedness to Him. What you call our "filthy rags" is just us doing the best we can to follow Him to the best of our ability.
The Book of Mormon tells us that "we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." (2 Nephi 25:23) That doesn't mean we can make it 99% of the way on our own -- on the contrary, it means that "if [we] should serve him who has created [us] from the beginning, and is preserving [us] from day to day, by lending [us] breath, that [we] may live and move and do according to [our] own will, and even supporting [us] from one moment to another—I say, if [[we] should serve him with all [our] whole souls yet [we] would be unprofitable servants." (Mosiah 2:21) The bracketed words, BTW, are just changing the third person, as in the original of King Benjamin’s sermon, to the first person. The Savious gives us everything we need, and all he asks in return is that we accept Him, love Him, and keep His commandments. See John 14:15 for His statement on that subject.
Our works do not save us -- they demonstrate our love for Christ and bring us closer to Him, who is the Only One who can cleanse us from our sins and make it possible for us to return to the presence of God, if that is our desire.
Why do people insist upon making these types of crimes. This is terrible and senseless crime. The perp shot the young men because they witness a crime according to our local news. This is not a racial issue.
See, you're trying shape-shifting again. As I've said three times on this thread I understand that you believe Jesus died to earn you eternal life (saved). So what is exhaltation and how do you earn exhaltation? Through works. THE END
Please don't preach to me. I am/was LDS, I've attended the temple and I know your answers. I have since learned not to believe them. I have found the true Grace of God....I no longer strive to be perfect...I am not, and can never be, but through the Grace of God.
