(Vanity) FreeRepublic Folding@Home Project Update (We're in the Top 1,200!)

OK, new thread for the next week.

First, a big shout out to the SETI members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 104 processors and 76 users. We have a number of new users in the team, with Clara Lou, fzx12345, SamfromLivingston, brityank, manwiththehands and Tami all popping onto the hit list this week.

Malsua, uriah and Ken in Texas are solidly in the top 10. Malsua is continuing to add systems and now accounts for 10% of the FR total. Great job!

Free Republic Folding@Home Stats Page

On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 1196. We are poised to overtake (today):

carletonu (maybe in MN?)
Helms-Deep
2*ian
Dynadues
Soluchis
Greece and soon the
University of Pennsylvania!

We were passed by one team, SISD. My guess is that this team really is the computers of an Independent School District that were all "volunteered" to fold over the holidays. They are producing points at a rate of 37,000 points per day. As we gain members from the 100,000 FReepers that visit JimRob's place I expect that we will have a much greater long term growth than them.

The latest radar projection at FAH stats suggests that we could move into the top 1000 before the end of the year.

Way to go folks!! Thanks for all the effort.

That's sorta neat. It's a bit behind because I hit 120WU about 12 hours ago. Still, nice tool

w00w00! I'm gunning for Dean for America, myself. The founder of that team is a big Kossack. Click on the Daily Kos thread linked in the DU F@H recruiting article and you'll see him posting.

Cool. :-) I'm roughly familiar with Daemontools, although it's been awhile since I've used it. Thanks!

I'd never used it, but the bsdguides.org page I linked includes a link to the bsdguides page for Daemontools, too, and will walk you through both, step-by-step. If you hit any snags, holler...

Once the client was up and running, I added a read-only Samba share to the folding@home/root directory, so FahMon (running on an XP box) can fetch its info.

Daemon Tools is a fantastic program. I use it primarily for mounting DVD ISOs so that I can watch them on my computer without the disk. I've also used it to "no disk" some video games I own(yes, own). I hate having to go find a disk 6 months after I last played a game. With Daemon tools I can mount the Mini-iso and I'm set.

Agreed. Daemon Tools is one of my "new machine standard installs" for Windows boxes.

I was referring to Dan Bernstein's daemontools, though, another great set of tools for Unix. These daemontools help set up programs to run as managed "services," starting up and restarting automagically.

Yeah, I was using the points as an indication of how small it was and that the machine is so slow. I'm not a points hound, even though I'm over 300. :)

I'll let you know if I have problems. I left a couple of boxes on my site running the client. Three of them Linux hosts, and one FreeBSD. They seem to be O.K. from what I can tell remotely. I'll mess around with it more once I get home from work. Thanks for the offer of assistance! I appreciate that. :-)

It's a good offer, no doubt, but...only one rebate per unit, person, household, etc. I put 10 in the cart, did the CC info stuff, and then I read the rebate form, duh!

Ack! Sorry, I almost cost you $180!

The other option is to get a wireless access point... put all the boxes in a location like your garage, then plug them into the wireless access point (or a router that's connected to that point, you'll need a crossover cable to connect the two), and viola, problem solved.
