MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!!!

As a teacher, I have appreciated all the perspectives that many of you give me. I appreciate all that I have learned from many of you. There are indeed lots of great genuine people on FR.

One way I have applied what I have learned here is to increase the amount of patriotic books in my classroom library. I now have at least 25 or so that I have added over the past year.

I would like to make a request though. Does anyone know of any trade books out there that teach about/tell about being appreciative of the military or armed forces??? I'm having a hard time finding books about that. Let me know.

You might also check with your local American Legion. They have both books and phanplets that might help.

Presidential Leadership by James Taranto of the WSJ and Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society is the best evaluation of presidents I have ever read. Yes, GWB is in there but not evaluated because he's still in office. The book is good because it's not written by the usual pro-left pundits but various writers who are quite respected. I think Peggy Noonan writes on JFK, as an examplem and Victor Davis Hansen on Presidential Leadership During War time.

"The Longest Day" by Cornelius Ryan is a must-have.

Thanks. I love the American Legion guys here. They came to my class last year and gave a WONDERFUL presentation. I found out that they enjoyed it a lot too. I am planning on having them back this year as well.

I would suggest loooking up the Corps series of about 7 volumes by WEB Griffin. They detail the activities of several Marine Corps and Navy types from 1939 till about 1952 or so. The characters are fictional but the events are largely real. He also wrote a series about the Army but it is not as good.

They are very popular but should be found in used paperback stores. They involve real men and real women in real life if you get my drift, but that is back story to living through a war.

Anything by Kipling will challenge their minds and give them a healthy dose of the "balance" of military life.

I have an excellent one for 8 - 11 year olds called "A Brave Solier" by Nicolas Debon. It tells of WWI. Beautifully illustrated and quite poignant. Pull it out every November 11.

Yes - and "The Last Battle" by C. Ryan as well.

We have the collection of Samuel Eliot Morrison - any of those volumes published by Castle Books are excellent reads for an adult audience.
