US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report

U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.

The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.

"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.

The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.

Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.

Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."

An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

I am outraged! If they want to keep a nuke in their home or church, why it's their RIGHT!

What's outrageous is that there's not a small number of Freepers - or used to be, anyway - who maintain that U.S. citizens do indeed have the right possess any WMD they desire (including nukes), and invoke the 2nd Amendment to make their case.

What would they say? We stand up for the right of Muslim terrorists to assemble nuclear bombs in our cities without risk of being spied on?

The ultimate payback is that one of these islamofacist nukes goes off, it has to take out the Congresscritter that leaked!

I can deal with whimps and cut and runners. Traitors are a different story. David Kaplan of US News is guilty of high treason and should be executed.

Don't you think this is another example of where the President needs to go get this investigated.

I hope either the President or Vice President attack the MSM again, and then take questions. I love it when they take questions as of late - maybe Rummy should give a press conference also. Rummy's responses are sooo great with the lame MSM. YES, THIS HAS GOT TO BE INVESTIGATED AND THE RESPONSIBLE PERSONS THROWN IN PRISION

I just find this so odd - - Rockefeller Implicated in Plot to Leak Secret War Intel

The left is only interested in raw power. Hence their de facto alliance with al Queda.

I am absolutely sick and tired of the MSM placing national security - and by translation, the security provided to myself and my family - behind selling magazines and newspapers and attracting viewers.

My guess is the more leaked stuff they print, the more the trajectory of their sales will remain the same as it is - straight down. They're not printing this to raise subscriptions or to get more viewers. They want some terrorist to use a nuke here so they can blame Bush and the Republicans for not preventing it. They think if they can cause something horrific like that to occur, it will level the playing field so that neither party is trustworthy on national security and their buddies, the Democrats, will be able to regain their power.

If there is a really horrific attack, then many Americans will completely overreact. Nothing changes as far as who they run to. If we needed to really kick some ass, who would America go running to? Al Gore? John Kerry? Nancy Pelosi?

Barney Fwank?

Sorry. Not happening.

If something really catastrophic happens, Americans are going to want an unhinged John McCain to do a few rounds of whiskey shots with Howard Stern and Michael Savage, and then let loose some wild-eyed, pent up Vietnam-era rage.

I'll be outraged too, if they stop monitoring all potential jihadic enemy sleeper cells for any & all forms of explosive devices which could inflict deliberate act of mass murder against Americans .

Why don't the leftist appeasing Dems ask why no additional acts of Islamic terrorist slaughter have happened in America during the post 9-11 era?

If a nuclear terrorist attack occured on U.S. soil, I wouldn't want to be a Muslim, any Muslim, in America.

To anyone lurking from U.S. News and World Report, what the hell is wrong with you people?

Don't be ridiculous. If it got to U.S. News, it's out. They're racing to be first, but would be scooped in 5 minutes if they didn't print it. Their source should be the one under suspicion.

Get a grip, people!

The same John McCain who wrote THE TERRORISTS' BILL OR RIGHTS? I don't think so. It might turn enough people toward Guiliani and make them ignore his sleazier points, but I really don't think it will help a crazed crook like McCain get power.
