US monitored Muslim sites for radiation: report

U.S. officials have secretly monitored radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes, since September 11, 2001 as part of a top secret program searching for nuclear bombs, U.S. News and World Report said on Friday.

The news magazine said in its online edition that the far-reaching program covered more than a hundred sites in the Washington, D.C., area and at least five other cities.

"In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program," the magazine said.

The report comes a week after revelations that the Bush administration had authorized eavesdropping on people in the United States. U.S. President George W. Bush has defended that covert program and vowed to continue the practice, saying it was vital to protect the country.

Senior U.S. officials, including FBI Director Robert Mueller, have repeatedly said Islamic militants appeared intent on acquiring weapons of mass destruction for an attack against the United States.

Mueller said in February he was "very concerned with the growing body of sensitive reporting that continues to show al Qaeda's clear intention to obtain and ultimately use some form of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-energy explosives material in its attacks against America."

An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny the U.S. News and World Report article and said, "We can't talk about a classified program."

Well, somebody's talking about it and they should be facing a firing squad at dawn.

Whoever did it is somebody on the periphery. :

Or a federal judge that cannot be removed without impeachment, like a FISA judge.

We are in a battle for survival. Our opponents outnumber us 100 to 1. We must use every asset we have, economic, high-tech, nuclear weapons, spying or whatever it takes.

The whimps and cut and runners have always been with us as a weight around our necks while the rest of us save their a$$es.

How did US News and World Report get this top secret information and why is it in the news as to how we operate?

As long as the administration refrains from punishing anyone, critical secrets will continue to leak, and the left wing media will continue to publish them.

That's exactly right. The Administration adamantly refuses to go after these leaks. It's a complete double standard. If these people had secretly given this information to the Russians for a few thousand dollars, they'd be sent to prison. But, since they tell major news sources, they're untouched.

At this point, the Administration is almost as much to blame as the leakers themselves. They refuse to enforce the law. Why should we expect people to obey the speed limit if the we don't allow the cops to pull anyone over?

There are other ways to detect radiation other than a bulky ole geiger counter. You start by looking at types of personal dosimetry monitors or TLDs.

My TLD that was assigned during to decon and decontamination project could pass for pager. There are some pretty hi-tech new fangled devices out there beyond a bulky geiger counter.

Terry Moron just led off with this. ___Hole! Whoever leaked this needs to be shot blindfolded. P.S. I don't usually watch but couldn't change it fast enough.

the sad truth is - that the adminsration fears the "reaction" from the inside the beltway culture, which is dominated by the left wing media. you need someone who is willing to smash that culture, that permanent un-elected structure that believe they run the country, because they set the agenda through the media.

Would someone kindly tell these MSM idiots we're at war?

The MSM is also at war -- with George W. Bush. They couldn't care less about national security.

There now seems to be a theory in the US that it is OK TO DISCLOSE NATIONAL SECRETS. This is an outrage and the DOJ should immediately be opening another investigation into Congress/NEST, and the MSM. These leaks have to stop and folks have got to be thrown in prison or sent to the chair like Ethel and Julius Rosenberg

Because the left and their willing accomplices in the MSM want America dead - simple as that. Fifth Column

Could the media possibly be more unfriendly to Bush than they already are?

They all supported the investigation into the Plame "leak." They stood by when Judith Miller was put in jail, and they even attacked her after she came out.

It seems to me that they have never been more vulnerable than they are now. And I can hardly think of an issue more likely to appeal to people than the issue of protection against nuclear attacks by terrorists. The press would have a very hard time spinning this against Bush.

What would they say? We stand up for the right of Muslim terrorists to assemble nuclear bombs in our cities without risk of being spied on?

Don't you think this is another example of where the President needs to go get this investigated.

We can't have leaking all over like this during war time.

If some Congressmen or Senators will be due a hanging for treason regarding these matters, so be it.

War is serious business and anybody leaking this stuff should be in the slammer in the very least.

I've long thought that myself. What's disconcerting is that I live within eye-shot of downtown Los Angeles. If it were a low yield, we might be okay here (12-15) miles, but I wouldn't want to bet on it.

Idealy, I'd like to have property here and three other places in the nation. I'd like to be able to move seasonally when I retire. The chances of that happening aren't real good, but it is something that has been in the back of my mind for some time.

That way, if there were a problem in one area, we could relocate for a period of time.

I don't understand the left not wanting to protect the country. They seem to feel that we are not safer now than before 9-11 and that these safety programs being carried out by the administration have not prevented another 9-11 so far. Do they really think the fact we have not had another homeland attack is an accident? How stupid.

I am not disagreeing with you.

But the media would portray having a bunch of people marched off in handcuffs as some kind of "saturday night massacre".

the problem is that the sheeple don't look passed what's spoon fed to them - hell, most people who are against this "NSA eavesdropping" have been spoon fed it as "domestic spying", they think their phone calls to Aunt Milly in Florida are being tapped.

what would they say? they wouldn't cover the underlying story at all (the search for nukes) - the story would just be about "warrantless searches", and how the brave souls who outed these illegal activities were being taken away in handcuffs. are there americans stupid enough to buy that? yes, lots of them.

The TRAITORS in our midst that keep leaking these stories smell blood. They think they can destroy our President politically and cripple our war on terror. They are wrong. Our President is determined, and so are millions of his supporters.
