A New York State judge has fined the TWU $1 million a day for calling an illegal strike, according to WCBS (NY) News. Fine starts accruing today.
Until they forgive it of course!
Where do I send my contribution to this judge? His favorite charity, whatever he wants.
They'll never pay...........
Court Fines NYC Transit Strikers $1M a Day
NEW YORK - The city's subway and bus workers went on strike Tuesday for the first time in more than 25 years, stranding millions of commuters, holiday shoppers and tourists at the height of the Christmas rush. A judge promptly slapped a $1 million-a-day fine on the union.
State Justice Theodore Jones leveled the sanction against the Transport Workers Union for violating a state law that bars public employees from going on strike.
Attorneys for the city and state had asked Jones to hit the union with a "very potent fine" for defying the law.
I would love to see this strike go on for months.
It would be a great thing to watch people cope, adapt and, eventually, be able to do WITHOUT the TWU.
Now if a judge would just fine the NYT $1 mil per day for it's anti American propaganda, we'd be in business...
Let's see, the strike can be costing NYC upwards of 400 million a day? Is that right? And this judge fines the union 1 million dollars a day? That's not a fine, it's a joke.
Don't worry, Pataki and Bloomberg will cave, and the TWU won't have to pay the fine as part of the caveing agreement.
Crypto-Liberal Bloomberg ping!
Easier. The mayor issues an ultimatum: Return to work on your regular shift beginning at midnight or be fired. If youa re too sick to come to work, you had better be in the hospital or bring a doctor's note. There are few jobs even in NYC where a 50 year old person with no marketable skills can make $75,000/yr.
The union has about 33,000 members, so that's in the ballpart of 33 dollars a day per member- not nearly enough.
Pataki and Bloomberg have little to do with this. the MTA is an independent agency.
The transit workers have cut their own throats. Street interviews with commuters have gotten one big response: 'I have to pay for my health insurance. Why should these b*st*rds get it for free while screwing-up my life??'
It would have been better if they used more acronyms in the headline. Example:
NYS Court Fines TWU
becomes
NYS COA TFU TWU
Translation: New York State Court Of Appeals Totally [Fouls] Up Transit Workers Union.
it would take several months to hire and train people to operate the system. and all the while, you would have violence and vandalism of various parts of the system thwarting attempts to break the union. in addition, other unions would join them in wildcat strikes if they saw the TWU was going to be broken.
it won't work.
Reagan had the solution for government workers who illegally strike. Fire them.
Next to come, by law, is the fine of all striking workers. It will be soon, and it will be TWO DAYS PAY for each day out on strike - payable by each individual union member.
Jailing the union leaders is also a remedy which has been used in the past and will probably be used again, if the strike lingers.
