it would take several months to hire and train people to operate the system. and all the while, you would have violence and vandalism of various parts of the system thwarting attempts to break the union. in addition, other unions would join them in wildcat strikes if they saw the TWU was going to be broken.

it won't work.

It is better to have a clean cut that have this festering wound grow each year. So what if the other unions strike. They should clean house with them as well. Once the union members realize that their jobs are at the convenience of the government they will no longer be able to strongarm the people.

And if the union members resort to violence, call in the National Guard. The city should not be held hostage because of fear.

They said the same thing about the ATC union. It doesn't take months to train someone to drive a bus or operate a subway train, it takes a few days.

Also, if the unions threaten violence, they become terrorists and ought to be treated as such. The government has a "no negotiations" policy with terrorists.
