Architect Chosen to Build WTC Office Tower

British architect Lord Norman Foster has been chosen to build an office tower at the World Trade Center site.

Foster's previous projects include the new Hearst tower in Manhattan, the Beijing airport and the Swiss Re headquarters in London.

Rebuilding officials in New York say Foster's tower will be the second of developer Larry Silverstein's five planned office towers at ground zero.

Foster joins a half-dozen architects, including Frank Gehry and Santiago Calatrava, hired since the 2001 attack to design different projects at the 16-acre trade center site. A transit hub designed by Calatrava is under construction now.

Construction is scheduled to begin this spring on architect David Childs' Freedom Tower skyscraper. Groundbreaking is also scheduled in spring for a trade center memorial, and Gehry has submitted designs for a performing arts center.

Silverstein hired Foster to build a 2.4-million square-foot tower with ground-level retail space and an underground concourse connecting workers to the new transit hub. Construction on the building is scheduled to begin in 2007, and it is to open in 2011, two years after the Freedom Tower.

I wish they would just rebuild the original Twin Towers, with modern strengthening techniques and maybe a SAM battery on the roof. Why should the Islamofascists succed in altering an American skyline?

And yes, I would work on the top floor of a rebuilt WTC.

I think they should build a huge hand with middle finger extended 1776 feet into the air.

Prince Charles dissed LORD NORMAN FOSTER in 1987 as one of the architects who'd done more damage to London than the Luftwaffe, but since '87 he's designed three new courtyards for the British Museum, and the addition to the Reichstag.

Nah. Build a giant art-deco building. 50's style sucked. :)

We don't have any American architects?

Actually, it is pretty appropriate with Chirac. They are both human rights activists.

Militant Islamists may have flown the planes into the buildings; but they couldn't have done it without their human rights activists supporters.

These buildings, little projects, they are making are pretty much their little flag of victory.

The only way we can get an American architect is to turn NY red.

Bloomberg/LMDC/Silverstein pretty much have this whole thing controlled.

From what I've seen in engineering school, the entire field of architecture is internationalized and homogenized to such a degree that it all looks the same anyway. Why bother trying to get an American, if he's just going to design the same crud a "ferner" would?
