In Lame Attempt to Divert from Beer and Popcorn Scandal PM Attacks Harper over Gay 'Marriage'

OTTAWA, December 13, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - After facing a torrent of derision for the inane statements of Liberal spokesman Scott Reid suggesting Canadian parents would spend childcare money irresponsibly on popcorn and beer, Prime Minister Paul Martin has created a diversion by pulling out an old and tired campaign tactic - attacking Conservative leader Stephen Harper for a potential repeal of same-sex "marriage" legislation.

Appearing in Ancaster, Ontario, Martin, calling same-sex "marriage" a "Charter" issue, challenged Harper to answer whether he would invoke the Charter of Rights and Freedoms' notwithstanding clause to override the Constitution and repeal Martin's Liberal-imposed legislation.

Chief Liberal spokesman Scott Reid created a firestorm Sunday when he said that the Conservative plan to give child-care dollars to parents so that they may have choice in child-care rather than being forced into institutionalized day care as per the Liberal plan was unworkable since parents would waste the money on "beer and popcorn." Said Reid: "(Children) need care that is regulated, safe and secure and that's what we're building here. Don't give people $25 a day to blow on beer and popcorn. Give them child-care spaces that work." (See yesterday's LifeSiteNews.com coverage: http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/dec/05121202.html )

Bob Tarantino at the Blog "Let It Bleed" succinctly spoofed Martin's apology for Reid's comments: '"Popcorn and beer?' You Misheard - He Said 'Harper Hates Queers.'"

The more I see of Canada's Government, the more fervently I pray for Martin's defeat.

Surely, championing gay "marriage" can't be a net vote winner - or is Canada a totally lost cause?

Dasher, the stuff I've seen on Free Dominion indicates about 80% of Canadians polled oppose GM... roughly the same figures you see here in the States. Canada's main problem is that a few, liberal cities dominate the voting process. The rest of Canada is fairly conservative.

Is popcorn that popular in Oz? I would think they would blow it on cigarettes and beer.

I think the Liberals are blowing smoke to keep the focus off the more interesting story about insider trading before the recent announcement by the Finance Minister on income trusts.

IMO it is a really big story being mostly ignored by the Liberal Canadian press.

I understand the term for this "communications" tactic is known as a "pivot".

Bingo! When you have nothing of substance to run on, you lash out. Martin is on the defensive and playing catch up with Harper's not-so-hidden agenda announcements.

Its a done deal. But it shows after 12 years in power the Liberals are bankrupt, tired and out of ideas.

Sad to say but it is pretty much a lost cause. Even the right in Canada is really just a soft left.

They have even built hate laws now that would have Harper charged for even speaking against homosexuality.

But is there some Aussie fascination with popcorn?

It could actually be a winning issue for the CPC. Most Canadians will likely never admit it to their friends, but in secret oppose gay marriage.

The child care alternative from Harper also seems to be a winner. But pollsters have been told that it isn't quite enough to sway voters to the CPC.

Maybe the CPC needs to sell itself on fighting crime?

Apparently the biggest issue is trust and accountability. The problem is how do you prove that your government will be any different? It is a dangerous issue to plug if the Liberals can dig up scandals.
