send an email to the Mayor of Rome protesting the erection of a mass murderer Mustafa kemal Ataturk.

Mass murderers should not have erections?

If this was a sex offender (like rapist), I can see your point.

However, I don't see a problem with mass murderers getting erections.

My grandfather was a full blooded Armenian whose mother had to flee. That makes me a quarter Armenian.

It is past history. I am guessing they are erecting the statue to honor Attaturk's efforts to make Turkey a modern country. Unless they are making a statue specifically to commemorate Attaturk's actions against the Armenians, I am willing to let it go.

But that is just me. Your opinion may vary and you are welcome to it.

It is not the U.S. citizen's job to make recommendations to foreign governments regarding to whom they raise statues in honor. I desire foreign governments to keep their noses out of my affairs, and as such I show them the same courtesy. Regardless, I would recommend all FReepers learn something about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk before even dreaming about offering such commentary.

"However he was not a Christian, a given. OTOH be careful of whom you accuse of genocide:

"However, Ataturk was not a mass murderer or supporter of genocide. Armenians’ principle accusation is that he was responsible for a giant fire that destroyed much of Smyrna when he captured the city from the Greeks during the War of Independence, but in truth, the source of the fire has not been conclusively proven, with both sides blaming the other. Individual Turkish soldiers did most definitely commit war crimes during the course of the war, and of course the non-Turkish populations fleeing the war as refugees suffered many troubles, but Ataturk definitely did not order any organized attempts at genocide."

http://www.hyperhistory.net/apwh/bios/b2ataturkkemal.htm

So what I see is a guy who loved his country and took it into the 20th Century kicking and screaming. You're accuastions of genocide are weak at best.

Someone who says it better than I:

"Go and find me a published encylopedia which accuses Ataturk of sanctioning a genocide, find me a published encylopedia which says Turks raped, pillaged, massacred and set fire to Smyrna, find me a published encylopedia which has a section entitled "Turkish government denial" of an Armenian genocide."

Obviously I will not sign your peitition. Rewrite history somewhere else.

This thread should stimulate a lot of interesting discussion. Many will rise up against the statue's erection - support will swell if you can arouse more interest. People should also not be so hard on you for the title of the thread.

A full blooded response is what is needed here. No half-cocked, soft, or lukewarm action will suffice - passions need to be raging, hot, and the message needs to be pounded home. This erection cannot take place.

Too bad the petition is in Italian...

The Pope is trying to trying to improve relations with the Eastern Church and now this.

The Greeks still talk about the Massacre on the Island of Cios.

The Greeks will not be pleased.

Attatuck kept Turkey out of the hands of the Islamofascists and well into the Western orbit. He deserves our thanks for that.

well, I acknowledge the Armenian genocide and agree with your protest, I think you would affect the argument by exaggerating the number -- yes it was a million odd butchered by the Turks, but not "millions"

Don't bother to come up with a link. I Googled Ataturk statue rome and the second hit that came up was for a Stormfront article. And if anyone knows genocide, it should be the Nazis. I'll not post a link, but here's the header from Google:
Say NO to a Statue of ataturk in Rome - Stormfront White ...
Say NO to a Statue of ataturk in Rome Activism and politics in Europe

Not sure which genocide you are referring to. The Armenian genocide was in 1915. Ataturk did not become leader of Turkey until 1923.
