Jeanine Pirro is expected to quit her bid to unseat Sen. Hillary Clinton as early as tomorrow, prematurely ending what had been billed as one of the nation's marquee races. Just a few months ago, the smart, aggressive and charming Westchester district attorney was the darling of a Republican Party convinced she was the right candidate who - even if she couldn't beat Clinton - could at least slice into her high approval ratings.
But now, Pirro, 54, is being written off as the first political roadkill of the 2006 election season. And Clinton never even had to throw a punch.
What happened?
"She's been hurt by a lack of money and a campaign that from the beginning has been sputtering at best," said Marist College pollster Lee Miringoff.
Pirro, he said, also fell into the trap of making a central issue of her campaign that Clinton harbors presidential ambitions and won't finish a second term, a claim that, even if true, doesn't seem to matter much to most New Yorkers.
GOP insiders said they expect her to toss in the towel tomorrow when Republican leaders meet in Albany to gear up for next year's elections, which also feature races for governor, state attorney general, Congress and all 212 state lawmakers.
Officially, her campaign says Pirro has no plans to quit, but sources said she will be "drafted" to run for attorney general, a job for which many of her backers say she is well qualified given her background as a prosecutor and former judge.

She's a loser.
Of course not. Not when there are plenty of NY RINOs to do it for her.
This is GOOD news. Another Liberal RINOcrat not running is good for Conservatives everywhere.
John Spencer, your throne awaits!
she never really ran a campaign. the media belittled her from day one because of a missing page in her speech. and conservatives piled on because as always, they want to destroy "RINOs" even if it means Democrats get elected.
Its Hillary in a landslide in this one.
LOL! who? what's he going to get, 30% of the vote?
Pirro did, but the dog-in-manger/ holier than thouers Conservatives and the damned Dem MSM did her in.
If she quits, this will be yet another case of the ultra GOPers getting what they all yearn so for........DEFEAT, when victory was at hand.
So this is how the slime clinton is going to make it to the White House?
Boy, I think us RepubliCANS better do better than this!!!
Couldn't of happened to a nicer example of affirmative action in action. District Attorney Facelift was not ready for prime time.
correct.
too bad Pataki cannot be convinced to run. he could make a race out of it, perhaps winning it.
I didn't care for her arrogance -- as soon as she got into the race, she and her people made it known that they wanted no primary, that she should be anointed the nominee, and that anybody else in the race (like Nixon's son-in-law Cox) should get out of the way. Not to mention her husband making Bill Clinton look like a solid citizen. She was a loser from day one.

Pirro drops out.
Smartest thing she ever did.
Give it a rest, Chester. Just a little fact check, no Democrat Senator from NY has EVER been defeated since we went to the popular vote 90 years ago.
the bench is real thin (non existent really) here in NY - you have to take what you can get sometimes.
yes, but those senators were actually NYers.
and what gets me is, the "litmus test" crowd chooses NY to make a stand - a state where demographics makes it almost impossible for them to win under ANY circumstances. this is the place where we should "stand and fight" for a real conservative? what for, so we can lose by 40 pts with dignity?
"she never really ran a campaign. the media belittled her from day one because of a missing page in her speech. and conservatives piled on because as always, they want to destroy 'RINOs' even if it means Democrats get elected."
If I can borrow and expression to fit this situation: A RINO is a Democrat, one drink at a time.
In other words, what real difference is there between a Democrat and a liberal Republican senator? Not much.
Conservatives are not simply anti-Democrat. We have to be anti-Progressive, too, regardless of affiliation.
"Its Hillary in a landslide in this one."
Run a real conservative candidate, and New Yorkers will have a chance to narrow that gap. Have some faith.
Including the ones from MA?
