Jeanine Pirro is expected to quit her bid to unseat Sen. Hillary Clinton as early as tomorrow, prematurely ending what had been billed as one of the nation's marquee races. Just a few months ago, the smart, aggressive and charming Westchester district attorney was the darling of a Republican Party convinced she was the right candidate who - even if she couldn't beat Clinton - could at least slice into her high approval ratings.
But now, Pirro, 54, is being written off as the first political roadkill of the 2006 election season. And Clinton never even had to throw a punch.
What happened?
"She's been hurt by a lack of money and a campaign that from the beginning has been sputtering at best," said Marist College pollster Lee Miringoff.
Pirro, he said, also fell into the trap of making a central issue of her campaign that Clinton harbors presidential ambitions and won't finish a second term, a claim that, even if true, doesn't seem to matter much to most New Yorkers.
GOP insiders said they expect her to toss in the towel tomorrow when Republican leaders meet in Albany to gear up for next year's elections, which also feature races for governor, state attorney general, Congress and all 212 state lawmakers.
Officially, her campaign says Pirro has no plans to quit, but sources said she will be "drafted" to run for attorney general, a job for which many of her backers say she is well qualified given her background as a prosecutor and former judge.

My, my, my. I did know. Remember why he ran, Einstein ? Because he wanted to keep that piece of scum Lindsay the hell out of the Mayor's office by drawing Republican votes away from him. He wasn't running to win. If you had two brain cells to rub together, you'd know that. How long did you work for Lindsay, btw ?
Lots of New Yorkers are fed up with Pataki. He's not really "there"; if you get my drift. He's just mailing it all in now.
Exactly so, but Bloomy is the real RINO.
You're totally wrong and just doesn't get it.
I couldn't agree with you more, if I tried! Great post!!!!!
We heard you the first time, Chester. Yonkers, the 4th largest city in the state, under his leadership, was the only major GOP-led city except NYC in the state that increased in population. Contrast that to the stagnant hellholes of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and your cranium. I've been through Yonkers many times over the past 25 years while riding the train between Grand Central in Manhattan and Peekskill. Then, of course, according to you, I've never set foot out of the state that kept Gore from becoming President. I'll bet you just keep on crying in your soup about that.
You don't see any pro-life or pro-gun Democrats do you.
Yes, Chester, keep up with your ignorance. You only dig yourself a deeper hole. BTW, what state do you live in ? I see you don't have the brain cells to even create an "about me" page. Things that make you go "Hmmmm..."
Stop insulting your betters with your blatherings, Chester. Some people actually live in reality and not in your fantasy liberal dreamland.
Thanks for the heads-up.
As bad as Pataki is, you make him look like Bill Buckley.
Sure thing. ;-)
I think he's a she. And she's a "national security" Republican. ie. a Democrat refugee.
Lindsey was a Conservative! Then, once he became Mayor, he had a mid-life crisis, or went completely insane; I don't know which. All I know is that everyone who knew him and knew him well, never saw it coming and were shocked, yes, SHOCKED, not to mention disgusted, by what he became. His record, as Senator, gave not the slightest hint to what he would turn into later on.
And yes, long before the general public knew, his friends, who had worked to get him elected mayor, knew, because he became a totally different person in private.
Lots of people come and go...it's the nature of N.Y. and always has been.
As always. :-(
"There are NO 'RINO apologists here', but there most assuredly a lot of people who have no idea what the term RINO actually means and misuse it constantly."
Why don't you go back to the Democrats? Your problems with the Kennedys and the Hillaries of the world sound like an intra-party issue, not something you hijack another party for.
If that's a she, Helen Thomas is a woman.
Your Kool-Aid gif suits YOU quite well; however, a bloody tissue would even be better. :-)
Oh well...it'll be a walk in the park for Hillary and that IS a shame.
Silly me for calling Jeanine Pirro a Republican In Name Only just because she agrees with Hillary on standing by your sleezebag husband, abortion, gun control, affirmative action, gay rights, unions, "children's issues", "woman's issues", spending, and half a dozen other issues, etc. I mean she's clearly a Republican because she supported war with Iraq and "cutting spending" and being "tough on crime" -- oh wait! So did Hillary! BOTH of them using such issues to downplay their liberalism and "move to the center"
Oh wait. There is one noticeable difference: Pirro is running to the left of Hillary on immigration.
Even Geraldine Ferraro asked RINO Pirro "Why the hell are a Republican!?" Something makes me think most Republicans she's meet in NY don't share Jeanine's "values"
If that makes Jeanine a Republican, then my "moderate" DEMOCRAT state Rep. must be downright Reaganesque, because I guarantee even he's NOT as far left as Jeanine and he's a political from Illinois, hardly an ultra right wing Bush state. Pirro is a joke in her own right and the only reason you guys wanted this lightweight RINO is because she's "not Hillary" you think she could "beat Hillary" by flip-flopping and trying to take credit for her agenda. You'd never vote for her in a primary to succeed a real Republican, say Phil Gramm. I meet people who trie that sale losing stragedy last year. They were known as Kerry supporters. Hey, Lurch is a terrible candidate is OWN right, but he can "beat Bush", that what counts!
