Chris Wallace: Mike Wallace Has 'Lost It'
"Fox News Sunday" anchorman Chris Wallace says father Mike Wallace has "lost it" - after the legendary CBS newsman told the Boston Globe last week that the fact George Bush had been elected president shows America is "[expletive]-up."
"He's lost it. The man has lost it. What can I say," the younger Wallace lamented to WRKO Boston radio host Howie Carr on Friday.
"He's 87-years old and things have set in," the Fox anchor continued. "I mean, we're going to have a competence hearing pretty soon."
Wallace Jr. quickly dispelled any notion that he was joking. When Carr suggested that his comments were likely to be covered by NewsMax, he responded: "You know what? Fine. Go ahead. Call them. That's fine. I'll stand by that."
Returning to the topic of his father's competence, Wallace Jr. explained: "He's checked out. I don't understand it," beyond the fact that Wallace Sr. has "problems with the war."
"I don't know why he said what he said," he added.
On Thursday, the elder Wallace told the Boston Globe that if he had the chance to interview President Bush, he'd ask:
"What in the world prepared you to be the commander in chief of the largest superpower in the world? In your background, Mr. President, you apparently were incurious. You didn't want to travel. You knew very little about the military. . . . The governor of Texas doesn't have the kind of power that some governors have. . . . Why do you think they nominated you? . . . Do you think that has anything to do with the fact that the country is so [expletive] up?"

I don't think you have dealt with dementia yet. In that case, speaking "against" what insulting things your parent says is necessary to protect them from harm. You say to her caretakers - "she would have never said that awful thing if had she her senses. Forgive her, please." And you tell you mom to shut up and stop misbehaving. Roles shift.
He got a ticket for was double parking, with him in the car, while his driver went into the restaurant to pick up the meat loaf.
He had a big fight with the cop.
Well..I was close enough to be able to
give it a easy search! :o)
Do they ever..My sojourn as her parent is over and mother is with her Father in heaven..The change of roles for me is over..until I become the child, a reality I may face. May God comfort and strengthen my children if this occurs.
Let's see......we can't (or won't protect our borders) thus allowing millions to latch onto our welfare system sucking it dry to the tune of billions, we have Homeland Security policies that have no problem shaking down gray-haired old folks in airports but somehow doesn't have the capacity to better protect our borders, we have many fedgov policies and departments that have been created more in accordance with the Communist Manifesto than the Constitution, we have to borrow billions monthly from foreigners (and future generations) to keep the fedgov afloat meanwhile the GAO estimates there's over 50 TRILLION in unfunded liabilities...........won't even go into the education system, idiotic free trade deals, a MSM full of useful idiot talking heads in TV & radio yammering on and on about left/right, lib/conserv, blue state/red state, etc.....all neatly packaged to keep everyone titillated until the next Scott Peterson or MJ or Martha scandal comes along to distract us even more.
Maybe in a clumsy, roundabout way Mike Wallace was trying to tell us all something?
Don't you remember the altercation with a meter maid, iirc?
Mike had the chauffeur double park outside a restaurant while he went to get the takeout meatloaf.
The chauffeur was getting a ticket when Wallace came out...
I've been so furious over his program...kicking Rove around, W around, Delay, anything republican. He's been on the DNC bandwagon...I've been screaming about getting Tony Snow back in that slot. So he could be trying to show the right...dishing his Dad (which Mikey should be) will help him KEEP HIS JOB.
You must have missed his interview with Levin.
That cold fish idiot doesn't have a clue what an orgasm is...LOL
I agree with Chris Wallace, but I'm disgusted that he turned on his own father on national TV. It's perfectly possible to make it clear that you disagree without calling your father a senile fool.
LOL...you're right. They've never played sports therefore competition is somethin' they've never experienced...DRIVING THOSE NUTS NUTS IS CORRECT. Love it...
At one point in the interview, Chris told Howie, "I wash my hands of the old man."
I think there is a damned if you do, damned if you don't mentality on criticising one's parents. Look at all the flack Mel Gibson gets for not dissing his father publically.
How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child.
Of course, ~somebody~ needed to say it but better sometime to let somebody ~else~ say it.
"A son or daughter should never speak ill of his parents in private, and to do so in public is rotten."
His comment was more in the form of a comment on a colleague's [stupid] public statement, rather than an attack on a parent.
I think pollyanish is on to something, tho. If Mike Wallace is slipping into dementia, and that is known to the family, using the expression "losing it" might be the only way Chris can cope with his private grief for now.
If you saw the interview Chris did a few weeks ago with Mike Wallace, he was obviously very emotional and warm towards him while asking some tough questions (even if he did let him get away with some 'iffy' answers, i.e, journalists are 'patriots').
There is no question that as a SON, he has great fondness for his father. As a COLLEAGUE he can differ in opinion.
...particularly obvious in the case of Mike Wallace and Jack Murtha.
Well, of course, he's "permitted" to do so. I just have a hard time respecting a man who'd slam his own Dad that way. Sure, the elder Wallace is a loon and has been for a long time, but the son should make his own mark, let his work speak for itself and leave it to others to point out the difference from his crazy Dad.
He could have honored both. Stood for his country at war, against the opinions stated by his father while not directly knocking his own father, if that be what this was. And it's no honor for a nation that has sons who dishonor their own fathers.
The kind of burden you'd suggest in this case I do not think that it so directly applies, for Mike Wallace did not, afaik, directly speak against his own son. But there are such cases, and when they occur the parents must be honored at least by not directly rebuking them in public.
