Feds arrest six in ecoterrorism investigation

Federal authorities announced Thursday the biggest eco-terrorism bust in U.S. history, clearing up a series of arsons that plagued the Pacific Northwest from 1998 to 2001.

The U.S. Attorney for Oregon, Karen J. Immergut, announced the arrests of six alleged ecosaboteurs from Portland to New York accused of taking part in four arsons attributed to the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front, as well as the vandalizing of power transmission lines.

The nine-year investigation cleared up, in order, the June 1998 arson of a U.S. Department of Agriculture building in Olympia; the December 1998 torching of U.S. Forest Industries in Medford; the January 2001 arson at Superior Lumber Co. in Glendale; and the May 2001 arson at Jefferson Poplar Farms in Clatskanie.

Authorities also announced they have cleared up the downing of a power transmission line near Bend on the eve of the 2000 millennium celebration.

Arrested were Sanislas G. Meyerhoff, 28, in Charlottesville, Va.; Daniel G. McGowan, 31, in New York; Kevin M. Tubbs, 36, in Springfield, Ore.; William C. Rodgers, 40, of Prescott, Ariz.; Sarah K. Harvey, 28, in Flagstaff, Ariz.; and Chelsea D. Gerlach, 28, in Portland.

Each of the six was charged with taking part in one or more of the crimes.

"There have been three other convictions recently for ecoterrorism in Oregon. One more suspect is fighting extradition from Canada. It's a good start."

I saw this in the morning paper, and it looks like the task force scored big time with this crew. The paper hinted that there are likely going to be follow-on charges against this bunch and that these indictments are just the opening volley.

Any idea where things stand with Tre Arrow's extradition? I can't wait to see that smug bastard behind US bars...

PETA will be announcing the arrests and paying for these freak's legal fees, no doubt. PETA has done this before.

This is GREAT news, Gramps!
I have been so busy that I had not heard about this!

I'm glad the feds are in charge.
CA, OR, and WA certainly haven't done anything about these folks.
I hope that, eventually, these groups will be shut down completely.

Thanks ever so much for the ping!

Let their wages be garnished for 10 years. That will give them something to think about.

Most of my family is in Prescott, AZ - I'll let you know if I hear anything about "William C. Rodgers, 40, of Prescott, Ariz."
Prescott has its share of tree huggers - one of my sisters qualifies. ;-)

He is still occupying a jail cell in BC as he drags his case through ever possible avenue to avoid extradition. I believe that he is waiting for the Premier or whatever to grant clemency from extradition. He could have got out on bail ,but, nobody would put their home up as collateral that he wouldn't skip. Even the freakazoids realize that he is a piece of work

You are 100% off-mark. Criminal intention defines a criminal act. These eco-terrorists should be prosecuted under RICO. Since you refuse to distinguish the difference between organized criminal enterprise and other types of crime- then your sympathies are now known. Don't even try to say you are naive of these facts- you get no pass.

Being from Wyoming, I'm real familiar with Earth First! Those lousy pukes should all be in prison. They do all kinds of vandalism (like trashing logging and Forest Service Equipment, and spiking trees) and they sabotage equipment that causes a risk to the lives of the guys that are out earning a paycheck so that they'll hopefully quit and shut down the timber industry.

When I was in high school, I've had many insults yelled at me in public places and by slow-moving cars on the street because I liked to wear a T-shirt that said Earth Oil First! One maggot even chucked a beer bottle at me.

You had a beer bottle thrown at you for that in Wyoming???? Where'd you grow up, NW Wyoming? Only place where the enviro-radicals would likely congregate

I once saw an ELF bumper sticker on a car here in the Chicago area. I was tempted to call the Feds, but didn't.

Should have set it on fire, loosen his lug nuts at least. Does anyone else see the irony in a car bearing an ELF sticker? I thought cars were wicked.

These same sickos put two 5-gallon gas/oil bombs at the Forestry Bldg where I did my undergrad to stop genetic research on trees. Luckily, they did not detonate. I had so many friends who lived within a block of that building, and there were so many professors who actually work to improve the environment who were in that building. Not to mention that my uncle was safety director for the university. I hope that these wackos get some real 'friendly' cellmates, for a long time.

Ray Coronado was arsonist-Rod Coronado's father. This 'loan' was never repaid.

Yes, exactly. Theoretically, if they are to be true to their "beliefs" they should be living like Luddites or the Amish.

This Oregon report misspelled the first name of the first perp listed - it should be Stanislas Meyerhoff.

This guy is listed on the Dean's List of Oregon Community College in 2004.

But they should not be punished because of why they did it. This would just be feeding into the same nonsense that gave us "hate crime" legislation.

Disagree

Why they did it is a conspiracy. That is a more serious crime than setting one individual fire.
