When the people rushed to rescue the dog it was too late
A pack of furious squirrels attacked a stray dog and tore it to shreds in Russia's Far East. The incident occurred in the center of the settlement of Lazo in the Dalnerechensky District. black squirrel
Three locals walking in a park were witnesses of the incident. They say the stray dog was barking at black squirrels jumping from one tree to another. Then the squirrels grouped and suddenly attacked the mongrel.
The witnesses said the squirrels fiercely eviscerated the dog. When the people rushed to rescue the dog it was too late. The fight between the dog and the squirrels lasted for not longer than a minute. When the triumphant squirrels saw the humans approaching, they scattered carrying pieces of the prey in their mouths.
The incident made locals incredibly cautious and people now prefer to pass the park by and do not let children play there. People fear that savage squirrels may attack someone again. One of the locals says that if another accident occured there it would make sense to fix traps in the forest to catch squirrels.
Squirrels have little cones to eat this year. Usually, squirrels lived in the woods only but this year they have come to live right in the center of the settlement.
Mikhail Tiunov from the Far East Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences says he has never heard about squirrel attacking other animals before. "This sounds nonsensical that squirrels attacked a stray dog and tore it to pieces. If this actually happened, the life of squirrels in the forest seems to be really hard this year. It is typical of squirrels to feed on nuts, seeds and mushrooms. And it is unlikely that squirrels have become so aggressive as a result of some mutation," Newsru quoted the expert as saying.
Makes me think of this little guy from Monty Python:

Welcome to deadsquirrel.com, the official site of the Squirrel Defamation League. Our mission is to rid the world of all squirrels. The only good squirrel is a dead squirrel.
We have been in existence since 1997, helping the public with squirrel problems and dispelling myths about these supposed cute and cuddly animals.
Squirrels are the most dangerous threat known to man and, if not kept in check, will be the downfall of life as we know it.
In war there is no prize for the runner-up.

BENICIA POLICE AND FIRE LOG
October 28, 2002: Benicia woman attacked by the Zodiac squirrel?
MONDAY
10:26 a.m. A woman on the 1600 block of West 7th Street near Interstate 780 reported that "a very aggressive squirrel" came out of some bushes and attacked her as she was walking southbound on the west side of West Seventh Street. After conducting a thorough search of the area, police were unable to locate any predatory, carnivorous, or even suspicious thug squirrels, so the search was called off.

"They're chipmonks......"
Uh, should that be .."munks."?
Otherwise I think chipmonks would be some sort of religious order, would they not?
Sounds as if that squirrel was not the brightest.
They will will raid bird nests and kill the young and eat them. They will also pounce on any crippled creature like a bird or cat.
Squirrels don't eat the whole dog, only the nuts. Ouch!
Well, he wasn't hiding all the acorns under the same leaf ... it was a different leaf each time. But, you're probably right about his brightness. I had dozens of squirrels in my yard and he was the only one using this particular method of storing acorns for the winter.
A lesson should have been learned from the killer rabbit in Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail.
It's time for the holy hand grenade.
Sorry but Chip and Dale were chipmunks.
I have a Shepherd that actually hunkers down, stalks and pounces like a cat. He's not always succesful, and the contest evolves into a more traditional canid pursuit should the prey dodge the initial onslaught. He does have a surprisingly high "hit" ratio, which increases proportionately with degree of embarassment he'll subject me to by parading around and into the house with a freshly killed squirrel, possum, turtle (cracked the shell with his jaws...took me a little while to figure out what it was), or other critter. Many first time visitors to my place have been honored with the presentation of nature's bounty.
The cat caught a vole, killed it and brought it to me. I appreciate the sentiment, but the cat seemd disappointed when I tossed the vole to the owls. Next time the cat brought a live vole and laid it at my feet, thinking who knows what cats think, and just watched while the vole recovered and ran under the counter. Next morning the vole was found drowned in the cat's water bowl, of course [voles do that--standard behavior], but the cat was totally disgusted and never brought another vole. That is why I prefer dogs, they don't expect much of you.
under a leaf, yeah that's a good spot where no one will find it- course we have to assume the squirrel has a thought process.
poor poochy. I've always heard that squirrels can be really nasty.
Maybe the squirrels were just plain sick of being barked at! Sometimes people react that way too. And sometimes there is justice.
"One of the locals says that if another accident occured there it would make sense to fix traps in the forest to catch squirrels."
When? After they tear a child to pieces? Shoot 'em now!
We could use some of them for ZOTTING the trolls. Wonder if Russia will let us have some to drop in Osama's, Saddam's, and Zowie's shorts. OK, OK, MMorre's, GSoros', and SSheehan's shorts too.
Please pardon me. But your squirrels will eat a baby bird, too, if they get the chance.
