Hope this is not a duplicate. No more details yet Passengers getting off
Exactly my point. This guy was off of the plane and running from law enforcement. No one who really has a bomb is going to tell a law enforcement officer that has the drop on them that they have a bomb.
A person that really has a bomb will fake innocence so that he will have a chance to detonate it.
Families have to make sure that there mentally ill loved ones behave appropriately at airports. In four years and a after hundred of thousands of flights, this has only happened once so it's not an epidemic.
One can have sympathy for the mentally ill person that was killed and still believe that it was a good shoot. The excitement that some here show for the killing of this guy concerns me, but in the end, the air marshals had no choice.
Don't be childish. Any person who suffers from bipolar disorder who properly takes their doctor prescribed medication isn't going to go completely out of their skull.
Extraordinary powers? The marshall in this case did what he was hired and trained for, protect the citizens and the country. What if not only the suspect said he had a bomb, but indeed had one?
Okay, really?
If you are a air marshall- someone goes running down the aisle, claiming that he had a bomb, the person runs off the plane and onto the jet way, heading straight for the terminal where there are thousands of more innocent people inside- then......
What would you do? You get half a second to make a choice- you either let the guy run into the terminal full of even more people, even after he has already threatened people that he had a bomb or do you shoot the guy? Those are your choices.
Given the choices this air marshall had to make- I would have done the same thing- I would have shot the guy. The air marshall's job is to shoot the guy and protect as many people as he possible can.
You have had hours and hours to think about this and what you might have done differently- the air marshalls had half a second. They did their jobs and they did it well.
As terrible as it is that someone with some mental problems was shot and killed today, I feel safer knowing that air marshalls are on job- and when American lives are threatened- these air marshalls will risk their own lives to protect Americans.
Great post
Sure there are. They have to know the liberal version of American history, they have to have college courses expounding the finer works of Trotsky and Lenin, they have to read book excerpts going into detail about how wonderful the Clintons are, they have to read Mein Kampf, and they must do a book report on Ted Kazinsky's manifesto expounding on how he is so right about the environment.
As far as having to know anything useful or anything that puts our country in a good light, that's another matter entirely...
I disagree - I think they will to gain control of the situation. The police don't know if it is remote control or manual. But what do I know about bi-polars?
And?
Not sure why you've responded to me as I have no problem with the marshals' actions.
Exactly. Well put.
I've never been an air marshal, but I have carried a gun as a Coastie on lots of boardings. We got many hours of training for the various situations that we might face... but the best explanation of "justifiable use of deadly force" came as sort of an aside in the story-telling part of one of my L.E. classes.
As the instructor put it, something like this: You'll know you have a justifiable use of force situation when the shooter doesn't even remember drawing his weapon or pulling the trigger, or even how many shots he (or she) fired.
For the L.E. shooter, all they will know is that they were in a situation and suddenly all they know is that a perp is dead and they are scrambling for another magazine. ~In other words~ the first thought they really have about the situation is when the situation is over.
Another way to say it: If you have time to think about whether to pull the trigger, don't. If you suddenly find yourself to have been in a shooting situation, and the perp is down, and you don't recall making the decision to shoot... that's when you KNOW that the shooting was a good one.
ABC Nightlines Brian Ross said the air Marshalls have been on alert since Monday for a shoe bomber. An Egyptian flew into JFK and tested positive 5 times for explosives on his shoes..he said he was a student and going to Des Moines. They let him go and cant find him and he is not a student where he said he was...go figure!
The Egyptian man's destination was Des Moines, Iowa, sources say, and he claimed he was a student at Iowa State University, in Ames.
Strangely, after holding him overnight, airport security in New York released him. The FBI was notified after he was released. Now the FBI has put out a nationwide alert.
"One can have sympathy for the mentally ill person that was killed and still believe that it was a good shoot. The excitement that some here show for the killing of this guy concerns me, but in the end, the air marshals had no choice."
Has it occured to you that this man's wife is probably complicit in his death, because she knew he had problems and was off of his medications?? I have sympathy for the mentally ill too, but only to a point. If they are so ill as to create a situation like this, than it is simply game over for them.
In this situation, I would be disappointed in the Air Marshall who failed to tap this guy's ten ring.
We have to get it in bits and pieces around here. :(
Agreed!
Without knowing the wife personally, please reserve judgement. There was likely nothing she could have done.
A person with unmedicated bipolar disorder can be extremely difficult, illogical, unreasonable, even uncontrollable, all the while convinced that he's right and all the world around him is wrong.
I'm no proponent of the "victim" mentality of so many who try to shirk responsibility by pinning blame on others. However, in the case of mental illness, family members are often true victims.
This is personal. I know what I'm talking about. Give the gal a break.
