Update:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The trial of Saddam Hussein resumed Wednesday after a lengthy delay but without the former president, who had declared the day before that he would not take part in an "unjust" court.

The seven other defendants and Saddam's lawyers were present in the courtroom when Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin convened the session at 3 p.m., about four hours late.

Amin said the court would inform Saddam about the proceedings that took place during his absence.

Saddam Hussein refuses to take part in the audience of Wednesday

BAGHDAD - the judges of the High Iraqi penal Court and the lawyers of Saddam Hussein are brought together Wednesday before the audience because of the refusal of the former Iraqi president to take part in it, one learned near the court.

Saddam Hussein had reproached Tuesday evening the court for having decided to hold a new audience Wednesday, stressing that after those of Monday and Tuesday, it did not have any more clean clothes and could not smoke nor to go. "Go to the devil!", it had launched in conclusion.

TOm Delay should try this. I mean why isnt he in irons in the court? this is a travesty. The more of a screaming purse swinging baby libtard Saddam acts the more press he gets!

I would have him in the courtroom, whether he consented or not. He can be bound and gagged, if necessary, but he should be required to hear the presentation of the evidence against him, and the witnesses should be allowed to see him face to face.

That works too...drag his butt in there in his pajamas, bind and gag him and let all Iraq see him embarrassed.

Hooking Hussein up sounds pretty fair but I say give him a Nicole Ceaucesceau trial. Just take him out in the alley and shoot the bastard.

I dont see the problem here- The judge simply says "go get him and bring him here".... then about 4 nice big american marines hog tie him and toss him in his seat.

Repeat as necessary.

He should have to be there. Put him in Irons and frog march him to court. If the out bursts continue, gag him.

"He arranged to have his assistants carry him to his spot enclosed in a 7' wooden box..."

I love tales of passive/aggressive intransigence. In Korea, MP company commanders in our battalion were authorized a non-tactical vehicle (Korando) SUV for administrative runs and other routine, duty related functions. A friend of mine, and fellow commander in the battalion had ordered a marginal soldier to wash his vehicle, which the soldier did. The soldier reported back to him that he had completed washing the vehicle, and my friend dismissed him. It was not until later in the day when my friend had to go somewhere that he realized that he really should have specified "rinsing" in addition to "washing."

Dude....the last thing Freepers need to be talking about is their "Wizards did this or that..." Only Byrd and the Dems admit to that...

"This is a game of "Who's in charge?" and so far the judge isn't. Bad scene."

The Iraqi judge needs to call more sidebars.

In all fairness, I might not attend a movie if I already knew the ending.

"Actually, Goehring did his best to come on like a tough guy, to unite his co-defendants and provoke an uprising that would free them."

An uprising to free him is exactly what so damn is trying for.

Try him in absentia and get this farce over with.

(although it did occur to me that the judge knows the Iraqi people much better than we do and maybe he knows they are really into so damn making an ass of himself and so allowing this circus is giving them some kind of symbolic pound of flesh - as long as they literally get their pound of flesh in the end)

"...BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Court officials say Saddam Hussein is refusing to appear at his trial...."

Good. Try him in abstentia. Find him guilty. Get four lengths of rope. Get four tanks. Tie a legnth of rope around each arm and leg. Tie the other ends around each tank. Tell tank drivers to drive off slowly in opposite directions. Have this as a pay-per-view event. Donate all monies to the survivors of this POS. Do the same with OBL when found.

Perhaps I'm confused... does he have the option of not attending his trial? I thought he would be forced to attend. Can't they just handcuff and drag him in if he refuses?

A lot of people are down on the judge because he's letting there perps put on their little tantrums. But if you watch the judge's face, he puts on this great little smirk every time Saddam tries to act like he's in control. Because he knows that in the end, they're gonna kill the bastard.

In our justice system, your attorney is considered by the court to be you. Therefore, if your attorney is present, you are.

I don't know for certain the same concept is in play in Iraq, but it sounds like it is.

I guess you had to be there.

I was there last year! I believe it was the new crackpot that Mrs. randog and I saw in the square.

BTW, lovely country you have there.

Didn't they cage Nicolae Ceausescu for his trial?

As I recall, he didn´t get much of a trial. Still, it was more than he deserved.
