FBI Is Taking Another Look at Forged Prewar Intelligence
Los Angeles Times ^ | December 3, 2005 | Peter Wallsten, Tom Hamburger and Josh Meyer

From the LA Times:

WASHINGTON — The FBI has reopened an inquiry into one of the most intriguing aspects of the pre-Iraq war intelligence fiasco: how the Bush administration came to rely on forged documents linking Iraq to nuclear weapons materials as part of its justification for the invasion.

The documents inspired intense U.S. interest in the buildup to the war — and they led the CIA to send a former ambassador to the African nation of Niger to investigate whether Iraq had sought the materials there. The ambassador, Joseph C. Wilson IV, found little evidence to support such a claim, and the documents were later deemed to have been forged.

But President Bush referred to the claim in his 2003 State of the Union address in making the case for the invasion. Bush's speech, Wilson's trip and the role Wilson's wife played in sending him have created a political storm that still envelops the White House.

The documents in question included letters on Niger government letterhead and purported contracts showing sales of uranium to Iraq. They were provided in 2002 to an Italian magazine, which turned them over to the U.S. Embassy in Rome.

Bush cited Brit intel. This is a nonstarter.

The 'Rats smell momentum in 2006 and are gathering support for impeachemt proceedings should they gain control of the House.

Joe Wilson knew that the documents were forged before they were given to the U.S., so one presumes that he had access to them from French Intel...essentially making him a traitor.

Wilson and Plame should be *very* worried that their crimes are being re-investigated.

They won't gain control of the House. District alignments are against it. Their base of stupid people is large, but over the past ten years, it's proven to be not big enough.

I've read articles on Wilson's supposed "Nigerian investigation" from years ago that included quotes from CIA agents describing his trip. Wilson visited a few old chums from back in his ambassador days and basically took their word for it that no such uranium deals were going on. That's it. That was the "investigation" from what I gathered.

I'm guessing that it wouldn't have mattered if the docs were forged or real, Wilson would have never known or cared enough to find out the truth anyway. Not that the CIA has been any better about that sort of thing....

The CIA was just SO concerned they sent an admitted former drug abuser AMBASSADOR to "investigate" and never never committed him to confidentiality.

This is nothing but more BS. If anything the Democrat idiots should start to worry about how their clown and his idiot wife are going to be exposed as partisan hack fools, it's about time.

This is good news, an investigation in this matter of Joe Wilson is long overdue. Joe Wilson cannot be a happy camper over this announcement

They keep bringing up forged documents as if that was the only basis for entering Iraq. There isn't any evidence those documents were used as justification. The Brits had their own intelligence and we had other sources. So, why is the FBI investigating this at all?

No. The FBI is investigating who forged the documents. Bush never relied on them. He cited British intelligence, not the forged Niger documents. The forged documents seem to be misinformation and a straw man against the real evidence that Saddam was trying to get uranium. They probably came from one of Joe Wilson's CIA contacts.

This will be like, what, the fourth or fifth "investigation" of pre-war intelligence? I thought there were even Senate hearings on this. How long are we going to look up this dead horse's a**?

THIS IS THE REAL STORY: ( a long but genuine reserch brief, that the FBI could use in their investigation, an excellent analysis). Here we see the true role of Joe Wilson, and if the FBI find out, he may end up behind bars.

Well...the FBI did break the case of a 20 year old mob hit in Chicago recently. I'd give em another 20 to bring this one in.
