They say better late than never but......
The Illegals are being paid "under the table". This means they don't pay taxes or benefit costs, so their take home pay is much more than if a U.S. Citizen had the same job, even if the pay per hour is less.
The solution is to make it difficult for them to live here in their Illegal status.

The President's speech was tough on enforcement (which is great). However, the same amount of money or more will be needed to enforce that the illegal aliens go home once their worker permits run out. How will this be enforced? How much will that cost? If I was allowed to stay in the U.S. for 3-6 years why would I want to go home? I was underwhelmed with this portion of the speech.
Paul, I would suggest that Bush has wanted a worker permit program for a long time. IMO this is nothing but a cosmetic makeoever of what he has floated all along, and the makeover isn't really that extensive at all.
He will facilitate increased legal transitions into our nation. These people will never be sent back home.
The Mexicanization of the U.S. will slip into a higher gear, that's all. It will now be legitimate for millions of people to sap our resources.
Our kids will wind up picking up still another tab, and the balkinization of the U.S. will fluorish.
You and me both. Maybe Rove has been reading the Pew Polls, too????? My question: WHO did they poll to have immigration at the bottom next to bird flu (which BTW China says has not mutated as feared).
Everytime Bush gives Speeches like this one, people get depressed.
They start thinking of out-of-touch Country club Republicans and Internationists who don't a damn about this country, whose only flag is the dollar sign.
They think of Rockefeller, Jim Baker, and Arlen Spectator.
They sigh, and think we are going to lose in 2008.
To quote the President he is ever more proceeding to resemble:
"It all depends on what the meaning of is, is."
That aside....did a mechanic just set up shop out of the blue without any training at a lower rate? And we won't even go on about doctors. It does not apply to the meat of the discussion.
And now I will discontinue this conversation with you. Your view is all about illegal immigration which I am in agreement with. But you have tunnel vision as to the aspects surrounding it.
And the punchline is?
You are negative. A person is allowed to change his mind on something, as long as they are not a reed in the wind, bending to the slightest pressure, which President Bush is not.
I'm thinking that first two minutes must have been action packed.
But we can be sure the FR daily picture-licking politician-worship thread will be drooling all over his suit, his dog and his wife.
See post 214.
Name one facet of today's proposal that is different that what has been floated before. There actually is one, we'll sort-of. Lets see if you know what it is.
They polled a bunch of illegal day laborers LMAO ;)
Kinda like china said SARS wasn't a big deal too, and how China thought they could contain benzene in a river.
Alot is made about politicians rocking the boat on illegal immigration. I would offer that there is no larger boat in the USA. There is not one subject that more people would agree on than stopping this illegal immigration. How it is done, I agree there would be plenty of disagreement and debate. But taking a position of actually DOING IT,one way or another, will win the white house in 08 overwhelmingly.
I was really scared that Kerry was going to do that...and to be honest, I fear hillary just might.
All I can say is GOOOOOO TOM!
He also assured us in 2000 that he was opposed to nation building.
9/11 changed both issues. Or hadn't you noticed?
:-) I am hoping someone on his staff will read it.
go on post the example of your claim about apples and oranges. I say you cannot or you would have already.
What reeks of socialism is your pre concieved notion, not what I actually said.
the largest protion of our economy is service based. Something that people like you call 'unskilled' and 'entry level'. Too bad that idea is blown out the water with the sheer scope of our economy and what comprises it.
Mechanincs that set up shop keep alot more than those that work for anothers shop...and they don't work for %8.
You won't 'go into' my examples cuz they do not show what you want them to.
Seems you have the tunnel vision not me.
Looks as if your sun just went down instead of about to rise.
Actually three major things are different.
One, he wants to send the immigrants back to their home towns hundreds of miles back in the middle of Mexico, instead of dumping them a couple of miles away from the U.S./Mexican border.
Two, he does not want to release caught illegals back out onto the streets and expect them to show up for court to be deported, but instead hold them until they are processed and deported.
Three, get rid of the time limit on how long a illegal can be held if their home country does not take them back, in other words, hold them indefinitely if necessary.
