Chan Exhorts Asia Not to Lose Its Culture (Viva la Raza!)

NEW DELHI (AP) -- Action star Jackie Chan has a message for Asia's film industry: Unite against American movies or risk losing your culture.

Chan has starred in a string of Hollywood blockbusters, including "Rush Hour" and its sequel, and plans to start shooting "Rush Hour 3" soon.

But he told The Times of India that that such movies erode the culture of Asian countries, saying "Asians should unite against American cinema."

"Why do we need to ape their culture," Chan reportedly said. "I see an Indian saying 'Yo Man!' but that's not what Asian are about."

India, like Hong Kong, has its own thriving film industry, known as Bollywood. While American movies are shown in Indian cinemas, Hindi movies dominate the big screens on the subcontinent.

"Cinema reflects culture and there is no harm in adapting technology, but not at the cost of losing your originality," Chan said.

And I thought this was the good side of globalisation...You know, kill off the culture that props up so many dictatorships over there.

Chan: "I see an Indian saying 'Yo Man!' but that's not what Asian are about."

You notice that this is how the PC side gets their digs into black youth culture, in a non-direct way?

When we defend our culture, they call us racists.

American culture is the most virulent that the world has ever seen. If you have *any* sort of communcations channel open to the West, your country will eventually be infected. There is no way to stop it, you can only slow it down. It will assimilate other, older, more "well established" cultures in the blink of an eye.

Hey, Jackie - all your culture are belong to us. You have no chance to survive, make your time. Resistance is futile.

Talk about bite the hand that feeds you. I'm so sick of actors I could vomit.

Consider Rush Hour 3 Boycotted.

There is nothing traditionally Asian about movies. The technology was develolped by evil Americans and Europeans, specifically for the purpose of destroying traditional Asian cultures.

I agree with him here. Why anybody would want to ape the culture this phrase represents is beyond me.

Maybe he'll just give those dirty American green backs, back....naw.

Well, at least my hubby saves money with all my boycotting anti-American actors. He likes that part.

Have you ever seen "real" Asian flix?

100 times more bloody and violent than even the worst film you can think of (think Kill Bill but worse). Also, the tendency is to rehash and repackage the same old stories over and over again.

The one thng Asia doesn't need is more asian films.

Why would he make a comments like this against American movies? His career here must be going down the toilet.

Chan is/used to be my favorite of the martial arts types - lots of humor and charm in his movies, even the serious ones. BUT looks like he doesn't want any more of my money. Pity, I would have continued to give it to him if he'd just kept his big mouth shut.

Confucius say closed mouth gather no foot.

""I see an Indian saying 'Yo Man!' but that's not what Asian are about."

Psst Chan! That's not what American culture is either! I think you've worked with Prior too much. And why are you "aping" American movies in your movies? Shouldn't you be fighting poor peasants, killing those "evil" people trying to escape communism? Chasing down "evil" ministers carring (gasp!) bibles, and bringing then to justice? Taking over "evil" Mongolian empires, killing their Buhdists monk overlords?

Indeed, "Ape" your own country, and it's history Chan, lord knows the PC hollywood leftist moonbats won't, for fear of "offending" you, or a muslim terrorist.

It is. Too bad he got rich off us ugly Americans first. I bet his publicist bowels are twisted over Chan saying that. Now, let's just hope RH3 is a flop at the movies. Karma...

Speaking of fortune cookies. I have entertained a dozens of people from Shanghai. Not a single one ever heard of a "fortune cookie." They look puzzled but very amused.

Wow, who would have thought - a whole thread of Freepers outraged over an insult to Hollywood and it's depiction of American culture -

I don't think I have ever said "Yo man!" in my entire life. The only person I knew who regularly used this term was a previous roomate...who happened to be from India!
