The Southern Baptist Convention's International Mission Board has adopted a new policy that forbids missionary candidates from speaking in tongues.
The policy, adopted Nov. 15 during the board's trustee meeting in Huntsville, Ala., reflects ongoing Southern Baptist opposition to charismatic or Pentecostal practices.

Kind of like the additional commandments they add to the original ten.
Having grown up Baptist, I know also know the Cultural 10 Commandments...
1- Thou shalt not go to a movie. (just rent it when it comes out on video).
2- Thou shalt not play baseball on Sundays. (just sit in front of the TV and watch other people violate the Sabbath).
3- Thou shalt not make mom fix dinner on the day of rest (so go to a restaurant and make the waitress violate the Sabbath)
etc....
There is a plethora of evidence out there about pictographs in the earliest Hebrew

The origins of the Ugarit cuneiform script is not known but can be assumed that it was derived out of the same Pictographic script used to write Hebrew, just as the Sumerian cuneiform evolved out of a pictographic script. This theory adds to the evidence that the Semitic/Hebrew script is older than previously thought.
Happy Thanksgiving.

I know, but that is an odd interpretation. The Bible does say that speaking in tongues is evidence you have been filled with the holy spirit, but no where does the Bible indicate it is necessary to be saved. They read way too much into that sentence, IMHO.
Thou shalt not make love in the shower lest someone spot you and think you are dancing.
Thou shalt not recognize another SBC as thou passeth through the doors of the local liquor store.
And when I was in the mideast for two years the local SBC church we attened did not check on my family or bother to send me a single email.
But they never failed to send me a letter reminding me that they missed my donations.
Jhn 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Eph 1:19 And what [is] the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
Yeah, Paul to the Ephesians was a professional con man. But you aren't saying that about Jesus, too, are you?
God wants his children to walk with the power. But some will chose not to do so.
It's so good to see discussions forwarded with references to God's word! Not tradition, opinion, feelings, or polling data. So glad there is still some salt with a seasoning effect. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) Paul also acknowledged that for now we see with shadows. I'm so glad there is One who knows the future, and we are in His hands. Another reason to give thanks.
I'm convinced that the doubters have witnessed and studied the improper practices that are obviously off the Word instead of trying to understand what the Word says.
When one approaches any subject in the Bible with a view to disprove it, then there is inherrent disbelief. They don't believe, therefore they don't see and thus they misuse scripture to justify their disbelief.
They can never say they weren't given an opportunity to know about it. They were and rejected it.
The Baptists have never said that that I know of.
I 'm not sure I'm following what you're saying here, maybe it's the pumpkin pie fog.
That's a pretty long doc...was there any certain page you want to point out?
How was the Northern Pumpkin Pie? 8^)
Sure made sense when I wrote it...BEFORE my punkin pie!
Thanks for the link!
A little more detail on the measure from imb's site.
SELECTION MEASURES ADOPTED
During their plenary session, trustees approved a policy opposing a missionary candidates practice of using a private prayer language. The vote was 25-18 with some trustees not voting.
Issues of the policy involve missionary candidate qualifications known as Southern Baptist Identity. Those qualifications state candidates must: (1) be committed to and identified with Southern Baptists; (2) hold a conviction of truth as expressed in the Baptist Faith and Message of the Southern Baptist Convention; (3) possess a minimum of three years tenure as a Southern Baptist; and (4) have current membership in a Southern Baptist church.
In terms of worship practices, the majority of Southern Baptist churches do not practice glossolalia (speaking in tongues), states the policy approved by trustees as a framework for the Office of Mission Personnel staff to use with new candidates regarding a private prayer language.
The policy also says the New Testament speaks of glossolalia as a gift that generally is considered to be a legitimate language of some people group, and adds that prayer language as commonly expressed by those practitioners is not the same as the biblical use of glossolalia. Also, the policy says the Apostle Pauls clear teaching is that prayer should be made with understanding.
In terms of general practice, the majority of Southern Baptists do not accept what is referred to as private prayer language, the policy further states. Therefore, if private prayer language is an ongoing part of his or her conviction and practice, the candidate has eliminated himself or herself from being a representative of the IMB of the SBC.
The policy is not retroactive and is designed to be followed beginning Nov. 15, the day of its adoption.
Regarding a candidates baptism, trustees voted two to one to establish a guideline that specifies (1) believers baptism by immersion; (2) baptism follows salvation; (3) baptism is symbolic, picturing the experience of the believers death to sin and resurrection to a new life in Christ; (4) baptism does not regenerate; and (5) baptism is a church ordinance.
The guideline establishes that candidates must have been baptized in a Southern Baptist church or in a church of another denomination that practices believers baptism by immersion alone. Also, the baptism must not be viewed as sacramental or regenerative, and the church must embrace the doctrine of the security of the believer.
The guideline says the candidate is responsible to meet this doctrinal commitment. While the IMB candidate consultant should have a working knowledge of other denominational groups, the document says he is not expected to investigate every church.
Trustees voted that any exception to either the policy on a private prayer language or the baptism guideline must be reviewed by IMB staff and the boards Process Review Committee.
