Gary Glitter 'may face firing squad'

Gary Glitter could face death by firing squad after he was accused of having sex with a girl aged just 12, Vietnamese police have said.

Glitter allegedly had sex with a 12-year-old girl Two girls, aged 12 and 18, told police they had sex with the former singer - real name Paul Francis Gadd - at his rented home in the southern resort of Vung Tau in Vietnam.

Under Vietnamese law, sexual contact with a minor carries varying degrees of penalties, depending on the charge.

"Obscene acts with a child can lead to up to 12 years in prison while child rape carries the maximum penalty of death before a firing squad," a Vietnamese police officer said.

"Having sex with a 12-year-old girl, regardless of whether he had her consent, is still considered child rape under Vietnamese law".

The 61-year-old former singer was arrested two days ago at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City as he tried to flee the country.

He left his rented home in Vung Tau a week ago amid allegations about his relationships with two teenage girls.

Glitter has been taken back to Vung Tau for further investigation by the police.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the arrest of a British national and consular support is being provided."

Glitter was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail sentence before being released.

I guess Vietnam doesn't want to join the sex tourism jamboree.

If you're going to be a dirty old man, you may wish to do so in a country that doesn't put you to death for doing so.

From Wikipedia:

Arrest and conviction
His new career fell apart on November 18, 1997, after he took his computer to UK computer store PC World to be repaired. The staff there found a large amount of pornographic images of children on the hard drive and called the police. Glitter was arrested and, on November 12, 1999, was convicted on child pornography charges; he was sentenced to four months in prison. This prompted his scene in the Spice Girls movie called Spice World: The Movie to be cut from the final release.

After his release from prison, Glitter moved to Cuba in 2000. After his whereabouts were published in British newspapers, he relocated to Cambodia but was later expelled by the Cambodian authorities after a public outcry at his presence.

In September 2001, Glitter released a new album, called On, featuring new material alongside tracks recorded prior to his conviction. Many of these songs were originally written for the Lost On Life Street album, which was scheduled for release in 1998 but was cancelled following Glitter's arrest.

It was reported in December 2004 that Glitter was once again living in Cambodia, and had bought a house there, after he had released the single "Control". In 2005, Remember Me This Way the documentary movie filmed at Glitter's career peak in 1973 (and originally released in 1974) was released for the first time on DVD.

On November 16, 2005 British and Vietnamese press reported that Glitter was being sought for engaging in underage sex – one of the two girls involved was 12 [1]. He was detained at Ho Chi Minh airport on November 19, 2005 as he tried to board a plane to Bangkok.

Most just still would have been preserving his appearance in the film. That might have been cruel and unusual, though.

The man is a repeat offender and will continue to victimize children until the day he dies.

Either lock him up for life or kill him.

I guess that that's what that Vietnamese official meant when he said the other day that,if guilty, officials would take "very stern measures" against him.
