WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 - She grew up in the rough-and-tumble of a family auto racing business, went through concealed-weapons training, and bears a local nickname seldom applied to shrinking violets: "Mean Jean."
So when Representative Jean Schmidt, an Ohio Republican, created a furor on her 75th day in Congress by lobbing the word "coward" toward a Democratic war hero, those who know her best were anything but surprised.
Just this week, a profile in The Hill newspaper, which covers Congress, labeled her "gloriously uncensored." Back home in her suburban Cincinnati district, the Whistleblower, an online newsletter that tracks local politics, rushed out a special I-told-you-so issue calling the speech "vintage Jean Schmidt."

It is amazing how they love military men and how they love CIA agents when it suits their needs.
Well said.
I fail to see where the words of one aging Democrat congressman is putting marines in more peril than they are already in. Or emboldening an enemy that has already shown that he will stop at nothing to kill as many Americans and Iraqi civilians as he can. How much worse can it get?
Therefore, in fact, our personnel are in more danger...everywhere.
IMHO, this is very obvious.
Does anyone have footage of Ford charging the lectern?
In scheduling the vote, Republicans were trying to embarrass Democratic critics of the war, forcing them to dissociate themselves from a call earlier in the week for a slower but still definite withdrawal. That call came from Representative John P. Murtha, Democrat of Pennsylvania, a Vietnam combat veteran who spent 37 years in the Marines and is one of the most respected military authorities in the House.
Good on her.
But yes, his statement certainly discourages the call to jihad, doesn't it? Discourages their ambitions and new recruits?/SARC
Or does it enpower them?
How much worse can it get, you ask? You really don't want to know. But blood may be on his hands now. He is the Cindy of the Week.
Yeah, I can see it now. Two Iraqis talking together. "You know, Zufir. I was going to vote next week but since Congressman Murtha called for a pullout I think I'll join the jihad instead." "I know what you mean, Achmed. I was going to drop this whole bin Laden thing altogether, but thanks to Congressman Murtha I have renewed belief in our holy war." Please. There are no fence sitters by this time. Those who are against us are against us to the death. They aren't the kind to surrender or change their beliefs. These are fanatics. Murtha isn't going to change that. One Congressman isn't going to encourage them, and all be 3 congressmen voting against pull out isn't going to discourage them. And if you think that the troops are going to have their morale weakened by one Democrat then you obviously don't know anything about them.
I heard her speech and have a copy and do not recall any name calling. She quoted a Marine and that was what irritated the left and apparently you too.
I emailed her Friday night with a big way to go! Told her we needed more Republicans to tell it like it is and that I appreciated her guts to tell the truth.
Amen, and AMEN again....

Chabot voted for the pork-laden Highway Bill. It was a disappointment, and a surprise. His fiscal credentials are therefore a little suspect.
You STILL honor Benedict Arnold?
How about John Kerry?
How about Scott Ritter?
How about Charles Rangel?
How about Jimmy Carter?
All who serve their country in times of peril, at risk to themselves -- should be honored for THAT service..
However -- that "honor" doesn't extend a "get out of jail free card" for actions they commit over the balance of their lives...
Murtha remains a former Marine..
He also crossed the line and behaved badly...
His betrayal of the principals of the Corps, and his less than ethical behavior as a Congress Critter that has drawn an investigation -- indicates he strayed from the path....
Screw him.....

"He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message - that cowards cut and run, Marines never do," Schmidt said."
It's obvious to anyone not blinded by the same blindly partisan hatred that plagues MoveOn.hitler that she was calling Rep. Murtha a coward. It's too bad that's what substitutes for debate now. Instead of making him look like an idiot for his totally irresponsible proposal, he looks like the victim of a personal attack from the Republican version of Michael Moore. When are people going to learn that just because Freepers or DUmmies cheer or excuse personal attacks doesn't mean that most Americans approve?
She was reading from a communication to her, from a constituent of her's, who happens to be a Marine in Iraq.
No matter how many times your repeat this falsehood, it's still not true. She was quoting State Rep. Danny Bubp, who is currently "serving" in Columbus, Ohio as a member of the State House, not as a Marine in Iraq.
Regardless, a Congressman is responsible for their own floor statements. If Jean Schmidt read a message on the House floor from someone that said, "Tell Rep. Murtha he's the next Adolf Hitler," is she absolved from those comments? We Freepers ought to act like personal responsibility still applies to Congressmen.
I strongly disagree. She is shrill and should be ashamed of herself. I am glad President Bush said Murtha has served this country with honour. There is nothing honourable about this woman.
I get it, since she was quoting a Marine reservist then his comments are automatically accurate.
Rep. Murtha put 37 years in the Marines and Reserves, so using that same standard all of his opinions are correct too, right?
You sound just as ignorant as the typical DUmmie. Lefties call our President a murderer, deserter, and racist, yet the people at DU eat it up just because they don't like Bush. No matter how inaccurate the personal attacks are against him, they claim it's ok to make them just because they don't like his politics.
You're doing exactly the same thing. Rep. Murtha put in 37 years in the Marines and Reserves. He may be many things, but he's no coward and doesn't need anyone telling him what Marines do. His proposal was disgraceful and totally irresponsible, which any intelligent Republican could have pointed out. Instead of doing that, Schmidt took the cheap route and managed to make him look like the victim. Ask President Kerry how well these tactics work with the electorate.
Nuts. Compare his other votes/stands and make a judgement. Do your research before you knock a proven conservative. Mean Jean is your darling now, but wait till the paint or in this case the makeup comes off. Just another Rino that will be lucky to survive the next Republican primary in her district. She's got to do more than talk the talk.
Yes these enemies are fanatics...but that does not mean they are incapable of planning and preparation that would benefit their misbegotten cause. To assume otherwise is itself dangerously naive and underestimating of a dedicated and committed enemy who wants to see us and our way of life destroyed. We cannot afford to either underestimate them or give them hope.
Others may judge for themselves, just as you and I have done. But to break in front of an enemy, to openly discuss pulling out and the supposed wrongness of our cause at this level in front of a dedicated enemy is the height of foolishness IMHO, and absolutely WILL put our forces in greater danger irrespective of your feelings or snide comments to the contrary.
Others can reach their own conclusions on the matter, but I will not only speak out against it, I will do all in my power within my own circles of influence to get these shameless politically motivated efforts to cease and desist.
