HERNDON, VA –Warren Community College English professor, John Daly, said that “Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors.” Rebecca Beach, a freshman at Warren Community College in Washington, New Jersey, received this unexpected reply to a recent email she sent the faculty at her school announcing the appearance of decorated Iraq war hero, Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, on Thursday, November 17 to discuss America’s accomplishments in Iraq.

In the email, Daly told Rebecca that he will ask students in his English and writing classes to boycott the event and also vowed “to expose [her] right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like [Rebecca’s] won’t dare show their face on a college campus.” Daly’s mean spirited and hateful comments were directed at Rebecca for organizing Lt. Col. Scott Rutter and for hanging up fliers contrasting the number of people killed under communism to those liberated under Ronald Reagan.

Since Professor John Daly has created a hostile learning environment for Rebecca, she is demanding that Warren Community College President William Austin institute seminars on free speech and sensitivity to teach intolerant leftists, such as Daly, to be respectful of differing opinion

Daly’s insane email to Rebecca also claimed that “CAPTIALISM has killed many more” people than communism [emphasis his] and that the “poor and working class people” are recruited to “fight and die for EXXON and other corporations.”

“John Daly was hired to teach English, not to verbally attack students and lead leftist protests,” said Jason Mattera, spokesman for Young America’s Foundation.

Dear Rebecca:

I am asking my students to boycott your event. I am also going to ask others to boycott it. Your literature and signs in the entrance lobby look like fascist propaganda and is extremely offensive. Your main poster "Communism killed 100,000,000" is not only untrue, but ignores the fact that CAPITALISM has killed many more and the evidence for that can be seen in the daily news papers. The U.S. government can fly to dominate the people of Iraq in 12 hours, yet it took them five days to assist the people devastated by huricane Katrina. Racism and profits were key to their priorities. Exxon, by the way, made $9 Billion in profits this last quarter--their highest proft margin ever. Thanks to the students of WCCC and other poor and working class people who are recruited to fight and die for EXXON and other corporations who earning megaprofits from their imperialist plunders. If you want to count the number of deaths based on political systems, you can begin with the more than a million children who have died in Iraq from U.S.-imposed sanctions and war. Or the million African American people who died from lack of access to healthcare in the US over the last 10 years.

I will continue to expose your right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like your won't dare show their face on a college campus. Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors and fight for just causes and for people's needs--such freedom fighters can be counted throughout American history and they certainly will be counted again.

Dear sir,

The public website for the Warren County Community College seems to be having some sort of technical problem. The site is no requesting a user name and password to access.

 

I have never seen this situation where the general public is denied access to general information about a publicly funded institution and I am assuming this must be some sort of temporary technical issue which will be resolved soon.

 

Please can you have this corrected as soon as practical as there remain several thousand concerned citizens out here who are on pins and needles awaiting the announcement of Mr. Daly's release from his responsibilities at Warren.  We are all quite confident that you have no thoughts of keeping such an intellectual thug and outright criminal on your staff, not even as "part time".  If there remain any second thoughts on this issue, you should probably re-consider your options.

 

Looking forward to seeing the website open to the public again and to the new press release to be posted there soon.

Bump this one to the top again.  The school has issued a new press release and while it does sound like they may yet do something, results are not in hand just yet. Read it for yourself at http://www.warren.edu  a few excerpts I'd like to point out however:

• "WCCC President Dr. William Austin personally welcomed guests to the event, held on Thursday, and introduced Rebecca Beach, president and secretary of the newly formed club. Lt. Col. Rutter’s talk was well received, and deemed a success by attendees."  Good (so far) at least Mr Austin seems to understand that this situation is serious.
• "WCCC is further investigating Mr. Daly’s conduct and his expression of views in the classroom and on campus."  Again,  this is a good sign.  But as we all know, an investigation is not over until results are in hand. "Investigations" are often no more than a tactic to stall the public until interest fades and a return to the status quo can be quietly returned to.  We can not let this happen, keep the pressure up.
• "Indeed, Mr. Daly’s comments have caused much controversy on and off campus. Dr. Austin said, “I personally find Mr. Daly’s e-mail disgraceful and offensive, yet I must maintain that the college be a place for free expression, ideas, and open debate.”   Ok,  this is where the message begins to slip.  While it's very encouraging to know Mr. Austin is offended,  he needs to see clearly that what Mr. Daly did here certainly does NOT fit under the category of "...free expression, ideas and open debate".  what Mr. Daly has done was to intentionally and vindictively stifle debate or any participation in the debate by any person or group that disagrees with his own misguided concepts.  In addition, he has used his position to intimidate and threaten a young student.  This is simply unacceptable.
• "The college will continue to keep its pulse on this issue while maintaining its high standards of professionalism and integrity of all concerned, noted Dr. Austin."  And here is the point to pay attention to.  They intend to watch and see if this issue doesn't just go away quietly.   Please don't let this happen.

If any of you have not already, please contact the Board of Trustees keeping this issue in their face until Mr. Daly is gone for good. 

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm tired of seeing examples like this go unpunished and allowed to stand. This type of behavior on our campuses has simply got to stop and stop here.

The Board of Trustees of Warren County Community College will convene an emergency meeting of the Board, Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at 6:30 PM. This meeting was called by Board Chair Edward Smith.

The Board of Trustees intends to consider the welfare and rights of its students, the college community, and the public in lieu of recent events. The Board will also consider personnel issues.

The college President, Dr. William Austin reiterates his statement that comments made by Mr. Daly are his own. The opinions Mr. Daly has expressed do not represent the views of the community college, administration, faculty, staff or students, nor do his views align with the college’s mission and core values.

College President Dr. Austin said, “The Board of Trustees’ meeting is scheduled for the first legally available date.”

We have to remind the Trustees that Daly broke the anti-harasment policy listed on page 24 in the school's handbook when he said

"I will continue to expose your right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like your won't dare show their face on a college campus."

All, in light of this Emergency Meeting of the Board of Trustees and considering the tone of this press release, I am far more optimistic than earlier this morning or at any time since this incident began.  I intend to send only one more email to the Board and to Mr. Austin, this time a more friendly note of encouragement and thanks for doing the right thing, and give them the benefit of doubt on this until the meeting adjourns on Tuesday evening.

It would seem that between the radio programs and the appearance on Hannity & Colmes, that Miss Breach may soon have the apology due her.

This is concerning...have we Freeped the wrong body? I thought the "Freeholders" were the NJ equivalent of the WCCC "Board of Trustees"?

We know there is an emergency meeting called for Tuesday evening and the implication in Mr. DiMaio's email/press release are that this will be resolved appropriately. Just curious if you've had a chance to speak with them yet?
