Most of the myths , negative propaganda, about the USA began with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau who followed a nationalist line against the USA because Canadians needed to be pried away from the USA so that the French Canadaian Federal politicians could make CAnadians believe they were
special as Nationalist Canadians. This coincided with breaking the traditional military ties Canada had with Britain. For Example the Highland Regiments ( Blackwatch ) were demoted to reserve status.

Now Canada is ready to move away from this false nationalism, imposed by Trudeau, Romeo LeBlanc, Pierre La Porte, and Jean Chretien. This is good news.

I should know. I am a Canadian ex pat. Now 100% red neck
USA citizen!

The more that I learn about Trudeau, the more I am convinced that he actually had a loathing for Canada. I saw thi because his polices have weakened the cohesion of canada, the defense of Canada, the economy of Canada, and Canada's relationship with the US. Also, he seemed hellbent on making Canada into another incarnation of France but with less spine.

Not bad. I shot off a comment on the other article that wasn't too complimentary. This one is quite good though.

"how much longer the United States will wait before it declares that its own national security makes it necessary for Washington to openly assume responsibility for Canadian defence."

I think we kinda did that recently

Sometimes, the Americans make mistakes, and Canadians will let them know they're wrong. But is shouting abuse the way to be heard in Washington? Or is co-operating with the U.S. politically and, if it serves Canada's interests, militarily a better way to proceed? It worked for Mike Pearson during the Korean War. It might still work in a very different but no less dangerous world.

The only difference is that during Pearson, Canada wasn't invaded by the socialist mentality which is so predominant nowadays. The Liberal Party of Canada has no problem getting elected over and over again despite of a strong rejection from the West, and since the East generates the most seats in Parliament, the West can do very little to oppose the mighty East. Yet the federal government (Liberals upon Liberals) extract huge amounts of money from the West and call it “equalization payments” so the “have-not” provinces like Quebec and other provinces in the East enjoy year after year the wealth the west and its citizens generate, while they get very little in return.

Western Canadians like Americans, they like the President and most of them are in agreement with GW's policies, especially the war on terror and the war in Iraq - they're pretty much conservatives - but it's the East who despises western Canadians and despises Americans... and the federal government (Liberals from the East) are in total agreement.

Wow, Victoria -- you've got a very thorough understanding of Canadian history!

Yet the federal government (Liberals upon Liberals) extract huge amounts of money from the West and call it “equalization payments” so the “have-not” provinces like Quebec and other provinces in the East enjoy year after year the wealth the west and its citizens generate, while they get very little in return.

This sounds like it was written by an Albertan. Outstanding!

"The more that I learn about Trudeau, the more I am convinced that he actually had a loathing for Canada."

Yes indeed. Trudeau loathed the Canada he found at his doorstep. He worked to engineer it into a counttry in his own image: ivory tower intellectual, dedicated to non-military aristocracy, holier than thou approach to Canada -US relations. I hated the man so much I left. I hated what he did to the country I grew up in. Now I hardly recognize it when I visit.

Few people know the extent that Trudeau went to decrease cultural interactions with the USA. He made sure that the crown corporation controlled by the federal government : Air Canada, ended its communter flights from Halifax to Boston, where Canadian Red Sox fans could go on a Friday night and fly back on a Sunday night after taking in a game and fun in Boston. And it was a lucrative route! The route was not for sale by AC either, the price was so high that no other airline would pick it up!!!
Trudeau hated to see us Maritimers maintaining the traditionally close relationships we had with New England.

It was that bad. Now maybe the Canadians will forget Vive Le Quebec Libre, and get on with being good neighbors with the USA. as they always have been and want to be. Doom on all francophone federal politicians!

I have met some Canadians on campus - all from the western provinces.

I had a discussion with a Candian about the decline of the Candian Forces. At one point, he smirked and said, "Well, if something bad happens, Down South will take care of it" and winked.
