Corzine elected governor of New Jersey

Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine (news, bio, voting record) was elected governor of New Jersey on Tuesday, defeating Republican Doug Forrester after an exceptionally nasty and expensive race, media outlets reported.

Corzine, a multi-millionaire and former Wall Street executive, and Forrester, a wealthy business owner, spent an estimated $72 million of their own money in campaigns marked by charges of corruption and infidelity, including the Forrester campaign's use of damning quotes by Corzine's ex-wife.

Who had the smaller percent: Schundler (2001) or Forrester? I think it was Schundler.

I saw it mentioned somewhere that Forrester received 2% more than Schundler did. I don't know where I saw it now (somewhere here), and I don't know if they were referring to the primaries or the actual gubernatorial elections. I think they were referring to the latter.

It is so ironic, or God must have a strange sense of humor, that New Jersey is one of the best states currently to be a Traditional Catholic. I base this on the amount and availability of Tridentine Masses in the state and also on the less intrusive homeschool laws. It seems that there is an inverse relationship between the politics and the religious culture going on here.

I hope the homeschool laws continue to fly under the radar with Corzine et al.

You forgot Florida. A lot of worms from the big apple have second homes down there and vote twice in Presidential elections.

I think we should have check points at the gates to enclosing walls around these places and only people who can pass a basic test in conservative values should be allowed out.

Let the rest stew in their own juices.

If we're going to go down, I'd rather go down fighting behind a candidate who is a pulls-no-punches conservative--rather than just another RINO loser.

But it's not just that.

Elections are not just about winning - they are also about changing the minds of the voters.

And it takes time, and patience.

It took 16 years to go from Goldwater to Reagan.

The harmful effects of running a RINO go beyond losing - it alters the terms of the public debate - to the Left.

It changes the perception of non political junkies as to what constitutes respectable opinion.

And, of course, it discourages a lot of good people from becoming active in the first place.

It's true, for example, that if a Republican acceptable to us ran for the Senate from Maine next time, the seat would be lost.

But the major reason it would be lost is that Maine voters have never heard from Susan Collins why they should vote for a Republican.

It will take time to take back the country by voting.

But to start, good candidates have to run - and lose.

Exactly. That's where electing Tom Kean and Christie Toad Whitman have gotten us here in NJ--to the point where a corrupt, bearded, socialist wins easily.

Cogent and incontestable. Thank you, gentlemen.

Well thats what we did. We left Ringoes NJ for Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. Been here four months, its great! Sold our NJ home for lots of $$ to a new school principle who appeared to be very much the socialist, LOL!

"It's more than liberalism in NJ . "

I agree with your other points.

I also think the Republican party leadership in New Jerseey isn't operating on all eight cylinders. For the life of me, I can't understand why Forrrester beat out Schundler in the primaries there. I think Schundler would have made a better candidate. Also, I think they could have found a better candidate than even Schundler.

When Republicans run for state office in New Jersey they frequently also run as Democrat Light. Forrester presesnted himself as a Conservative in the primaries then ran as a Tom Kean "moderate" in the general election. I guess a lot of independents didn't really see any difference between the two and went with a quantity they knew. Also, in a race between two exceptionally lackluster candidates, Forrester presented an exceptionally lackluster persona in debates - or so I have been told.

I still can't comprehend their mentality.

They ruin their natural habitat, turn it into a cesspool, and then flee to surrounding states.

Then, they proceed to turn those areas into simulacra of the feverswamps of idiocy that they fled.

Liberals really do suffer from some sort of psychological illness.

I was going to say that exact thing, but I think I know where Jim Noble's coming from.
Of course we need to remain optimistic, but we also need to realize that the Status Quo Republicans have screwed things up to the point where we might just have to take two steps back before taking one forward. At least in some locales across the country.

Some fellow FReepers are saying the same about us in CA. Like we can up and leave are families and friends. Some of us actually want to stay in the game and not cry and run away.

The problem is not the logic of this argument, but its context.
As I see it, to suffer fools gladly post-9/11 is to do so at our peril.

We will not survive the Left running our foreign policy.
Certainly, we will not survive another clinton.
(We may yet not survive the first.)

WHY DID BILL CLINTON IGNORE TERRORISM?

DISCUSSION

"I remember exactly what happened. Bruce Lindsey said to me on the phone, 'My God, a second plane has hit the tower.' And I said, 'Bin Laden did this.' that's the first thing I said. He said, 'How can you be sure?' I said 'Because only bin Laden and the Iranians could set up the network to do this and they [the Iranians] wouldn't do it because they have a country in targets. Bin Laden did it.'

I thought that my virtual obsession with him was well placed and I was full of regret that I didn't get him."

"Mr. bin Laden used to live in Sudan. He was expelled from Saudi Arabia in '91 and he went to the Sudan.

We'd been hearing that the Sudanese wanted America to start dealing with them again. They released him [bin Laden].

At the time, '96, he had committed no crime against America, so I did not bring him here because we had no basis on which to hold him, though we knew he wanted to commit crimes against America.

So I pleaded with the Saudis to take him, 'cause they could have; but they thought it was a hot potato. They didn't and that's how he wound up in Afghanistan."

I was going to say that exact thing, but I think I know where Jim Noble's coming from.

When the People are not ready to elect a good candidate, we should not give them a bad one and hope they can be fooled.

If Schundler lost 60-40 this time, that 40% would be a base to build on for next time.

We need to develop some talent other than Forrester. The problem is, as long as he is willing to dump money in the Primary season, nobody can beat him to get the 'Pubbie nod. But he is a seriously flawed candidate and will continue to lose, over and over again.

Maybe after this round, he will have had enough. I wouldn't count on it, though. These vanity canidates can be very persistent.

I just get so frustrated, because Corzine was so very bad. I just can't see how anybody can go into a voting booth and throw the lever for that guy. Even if I imagine myself as a prototypical Democrat Lefty, I still can't see voting for a guy who is so obviously corrupt, even if he nominally supports my positions. Because you know he is going to be cutting his own deals and stabbing everybody in the back.

Maybe the (D) is enough for some people. I dunno. I'm depressed.

Word is out that Corzine is appointing that little troll, Menendez, to the Senate as his replacement.

Oh, yeah. Menendez is the Mortal Lock. How historic! < / sarc>
