Bill Could Ban Smoking In Car With Kids
Studies Show Secondhand Smoke Impairs Respiratory Health
POSTED: 11:14 am EST November 8, 2005
LANSING, Mich. -- Smoky car rides to school may soon be illegal.
Using a lit tobacco product in a vehicle with a person under 18 would be a civil infraction under a bill to be formally introduced Tuesday by Rep. John Moolenaar, spokesman John Whetstone said.
"We've all seen it on our streets and highways, children in the back seat, smokers in the front, and your heart just goes out to those kids," said Moolenaar, R-Midland.
The bill would allow police officers to pull over drivers who are smoking with children in the car, Whetstone said. A fine for the infraction would be set by the courts.
Several studies indicate that secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in adult nonsmokers and impairs the respiratory health of children.
An estimated 150,000 to 300,000 children under 18 months of age get pneumonia or bronchitis every year from breathing secondhand tobacco smoke, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
they could care less about kids or smoking. It's all another way for 2 bit bullsh*t towns to make a fourtune on TICKETS.I know my town here in NJ make one hell of a bunble of cash every month hitting up people for not wearing seat belts. Smoking ban is just another cash cow.
I disagree with you. I think smokers are more patient, tolerant, better parents.
Let's see... If a kid could choose to live in my house where they get to go climb trees, build tree-houses, camp out in the living room, read whatever books they wish (within reason), build a Popsicle stick city that takes up the entire floor of my study, stay up late one night a month telling ghost stories by the fire, sleep with one dog and three cats, have their very own pet snake, and lick the cake batter bowl...
OR...
They can live with a certain lady I know who's house looks like it's ready for it's closeup with Good House Keeping at all times, put their toys away after every timed "play session", wear "dress-up" clothes every day, be taken to a child psychologist because they threw a fit at the age of three, be put on Ritalin to put a stop to those "uncontrollable" tantrums, learn to sanitize their hands between timed play sessions, and have their toys boiled after their play dates leave.
Nah! Smokers are more fun! ;-)
I like the idea, too. But I am a coward at heart who couldn't do it alone, but would gladly stand beside someone else... who goes first.
I LOVE IT!! LMAO!!
Well, the good news is, my memory still works :)
Seems I wasn't the only one that read those initial reports about Smoking preventing SARs.
Here is a google search:

Those initial finds are now being disputed. But the info was there!
You know, I've noticed that myself...I'd venture to bet that about 90% (MINIMUM) of the smoker-haters who always claim it's "for the children"-are pro-abortion. I remember an argument about smokers on some FOX show about a year ago. The smoker-hater , as usual, had a constant smirk on his face. Every other thing out of his mouth was "children." The opponent asked him, "What are your views on abortion?" The smirk left his face instantly, and (visibly rattled) he sputtered and angrily stammered: "That's...that's absolutely none of your business!! And it has nothing to do with the matter at hand!!" That told me all I needed to know. Picture Rob "Meathead" Reiner in your mind. One of the biggest smoker-haters on the planet. I think you know where he stands on abortion. Another smoker-hater is Big-head Ted Kennedy. And that's merely 2 examples. Don't think more need be said.
A simple question, why does anyone with a job still live in Michigan? My God, the liberals in that state make Europe look conservative. The taxes, the over regulation and the socialism just can't be easy to take or pay for.
I'm a smoker ( and a damned GOOD parent! ), but the truth is, not all smokers are good parents and not all nonsmokers are horrible ones.
The fix here is simple, go to a flea market purchase a child restraint seat, some baby blankets, and a doll, set them in the back seat, and light up a nice fat stogie, and wait for the cops to pull you over. When enough cops get tired of pulling smokers over with baby dolls in the back seat the stupidity will end.

Smoke around your child and you are pand scum. Abort your unborn child and you are a hero.
As the left gets more and more control on us all, soon the only choice left will be to slaughter our unborn children.
Please post a link to that study.
Sounds to me like you won't be seeing the grandkids at your house.
I think it's enough for her to offer to go into another room. If the Daughter-in-Law from Hell wants to make her house payments or pay the taxes on it, that's a different story.
She has a right to smoke in her own home and her son and daughter-in-law have the right not visit with the grandkids. It sounds to me like they have settled on a mutual agreement.
The news indicates that France has a lot of problems with smoking cars lately.
I doubt that many people would argue that second hand smoke is good for kids. Seems to me pretty clear that better not to have them inhaling it. Having said that, however, where do you draw the line on government interference? It's better for kids to eat fruit than candy. It's better for kids not to watch too much TV. The list is endless! Seems the real question is at what point does the harm rise to the level of justifying government intervention.
Anybody who smokes in such close proximity to their children, doesn't care about their kids health. You can't wait for 20 darn minutes till you're out of the car to smoke? Give me a break, smokers. That nasty habit killed my husbands mother. Also, my parents smoked until I was about 9 and up until they quit we were sick all the time.
I think her point is that children exposed to second-hand smoke are predisposed to respiratory illness.
Alas, My oldest daughter too, has dropped hints that when she and her husband have children, we should refrain from smoking while the kids visit. As with other non-smoking guest in our home, I have no problem going outside.
