More than 2,000 dead --- worth the cost???

Posted on 11/07/2005 10:04:03 AM PST by gophergas

I'm getting a little tired (okay, I actually got tired a long time ago) of people making such a huge deal over the US death toll reaching the 2,000 mark. All around, we're hearing, "It's not worth the cost! It's not worth the cost!"

Well, frankly, I think freedom IS worth the cost. And I think it demeans the sacrifices of our troops to suggest otherwise.

To that end, I think it would be neat to start a campaign showing some of the benefits to the war in Iraq. I'm including a "starter" image to get things rolling...

That's really sad --- that someone who's physically deceased could be more alive than those who would demean and diminish their sacrifices. But I can't argue with you.

Gee. I was about to welcome you to Free Republic based on the title. Never mind.

Well, frankly, I think freedom IS worth the cost. And I think it demeans the sacrifices of our troops to suggest otherwise.

I agree.

America's Wars: U.S. Casualties and Veterans

Thanks for posting these numbers. More than stats, these are our brothers, fathers, uncles, great grand fathers... and some sisters, mothers and so forth. Their service in the cause of freedom will never be forgotten. As a veteran, I wish our citizenry had the kind of context these numbers develop when considering the cost of NOT fighting for liberty. The millions upon millions who have died under oppression at the hands of their oppressors are much larger numbers. This thread brings to mind New Hampshire’s motto “Live Free or Die”, but it’s more than that. There is no more honorable quality than a willingness to “risk” ones life so that others may be free. That “risk” however, should be and is calculated very carefully with our men and women in uniform!

2,000 or 20,000 or… is not the point. The point is the cause! The consequences for surrendering to tyranny are too high, and that’s the point! Americans should hope that more tyrants of Saddam's ilk fall like dominoes and be willing to sacrifice to see it come to pass.

So many people who consider themselves antiwar are also prochoice. We have had over 40 million deaths through abortion and as of yet the count is still going and will continue to go pushed by those who are antiwar. And we must never forget those women who been wounded, scarred forever.

I love Pope Benedict and the fact they described him as vatican rottweiler is just great beyond words. A dear friend gave me a photo of the new Pope in a gold frame the other day because she knows how much I have ALWAYS LIKED HIM.

This is true... but it would be kinda difficult to merge the two concepts effectively.

Your comment does give me an idea for another ad, though. A young woman is coming out the door of an abortion clinic. On her face is a look of abject horror. In quotes, large text:
"Oh my GOD!!! What have I done?!?"

Below is the line:
Abortion. It's forever.

40,000 Americans were murdered over the same time period, over nothing. Nobody bats an eye. But let it be about freedom and principle, and they shake with rage.

A most appealing advertisement incorporating passions that move men.

However, this war is not just about Saddam Hussein and his thugs. The war on terror is about the survival of Christianity and western civilization.

We must keep moving past Saddam. Saddam and Iraq is a mere stepping stone in the war on terror...our war is a war against islamic jihadists. The sole mission of jihadists (now and centuries ago)is to convert, enslave, or kill all infidels through out the world...It's been the same for centuries now. This is nothing new. They only thing new is that recently the jihadists have struck on American soil.

Killing Americans and Jews is nothing new for jihadists. Doing it on American soil is.

We must be thinking beyond Iraq at this juncture.

I have posted before....while I was in SEA...the least we ever lost in one week was 350 precious lives of American heroes...on 9-11 we lost 3000...so now let's put everything in perspective.....that being...the spineless folks in Washington that we have elected are jumping ship just as they did in Vietnam. Unfortunately this time they will be dire circumstances here in America. I am putting the Congress on notice now; If they cause any of my family to die because of their ignorance or lack of resolve this ole boy will be not only mad as hell...but beyond

FWIW, several hundred locals and I were priveledged to line the streets and salute the procession for #2000 who was a USMC Lance Coporal.

I did a quick calculation that shows that total military deaths as compared to active military personal, and the figures for the past three years, while higher than in non-war times…

I never made a major training exercise without some soldier dying in an accident. We often lost people in regular peacetime missions.
