10 Officers Shot as Riots Worsen in French Cities By CRAIG S. SMITH PARIS, Monday, Nov. 7 - Rioters fired shotguns at the police in a working-class suburb of Paris on Sunday, wounding 10 officers as the country's fast-spreading urban unrest escalated dangerously. Just hours earlier, President Jacques Chirac called an emergency meeting of top security officials and promised increased police pressure to confront the violence.
"The republic is completely determined to be stronger than those who want to sow violence or fear," Mr. Chirac said at a news conference in the courtyard of Élysée Palace after meeting with his internal security council. "The last word must be from the law."
But the violence, which has become one of the most serious challenges to governmental authority here in nearly 40 years, showed no sign of abating, and Sunday was the first day that police officers had been wounded by gunfire in the unrest. More than 3,300 vehicles have been destroyed, along with dozens of public buildings and private businesses, since the violence began.
"This is just the beginning," said Moussa Diallo, 22, a tall, unemployed French-African man in Clichy-sous-Bois, the working-class Parisian suburb where the violence started Oct. 27. "It's not going to end until there are two policemen dead."

I have to admit I enjoy the updates on this story. They have it coming.
It's happened in milder situations. Kent State, 1960s, 4 students shot dead. Ruby Ridge. Waco.
Don't the French have the equivalent of our National Guard, or military snipers, or whatever? That's what I think is needed here. They've let this escalate out of control, and I can't think of what else would be able to stop it. Tear gas, mace, bullets - are they doing ANYTHING?
How is that possible? France has strict gun control.
Maybe they could trade for a few politicians. They police are by far worth more than politicians are.
"Dumbasses. Or should I say, "Dumas"?"
Hey, that name hits close to home. My mother carries that last name , by her second marriage.
The guy she married was as you state though. It was a good day when he hit the road and never returned.
I've never seen the exact story on this, but if French electrical utility transformer installations are anything like American ones, there will be a high fence around them marked with warning signs. There would have to be an earnest attempt at a Darwin award to get inside.
He's a hero to the American left on Iraq, yet instead of taking decisive action or even pulling the usual liberal 'empathy' rhetoric card in these riots he hides until he realizes this isn't just going to go away. Then, he talks tough while his police are being used for target practice.
He is a COWARD.
Wouldn't it be a hoot to see Jacques Chirac go the way of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu? Couldn't you just see the corrupt french coward sobbing hysterically...
hmmmm would fit him perfectly.
Oddly enough, the caption is in Spanish:

Translation:

I think "working class" refers to the type of workers. In either case, the riots definitely caught me by surprise. If France and Germany are models for socialism, then it has failed.
The Washington Post captured what the rioters people want.
"We want the American dream!!!"
Who is the 'They' you are referring to? The French FOREIGN Legion may have the testicular fortitude to see this thing through; but not the Frogs.
The Frogs are the ones who paid Millions to Arafat to keep his terrorism out of Paris, who threatened to block any meaningful sanctions against Saddam, who cut and run (leaving us in the lurch) for both Korea and Vietnam. These same 'Allies' sold Saddam Exocet missles, made hundreds of Millions on the Oil for Food Scandal, and then provided SAddam's miliatry with intelligence during our military actions. These are the same people who used US military (placed under UN control by Clinton) as bait during the Haiti exercises.
Funny, I can bear France's discomfort with great fortitutde.
Daly allows guns on Chicago? Hmm, he didn't used to, only let the gangs have them.
"Wouldn't it be a hoot to see Jacques Chirac go the way of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu?"
I can't say that it would be. Seeing their cold, dead eyes on the national news, on Christmas Day of all days, made me ill, no matter how richly they deserved it. That image jumped out at me in the way that the images from Waco jumped out ... world-altering, and likely not in a good way.
In a sad reality, these two groups deserve each other...
"the caption is in Spanish"
That was Spanish?... Then I don`t know Spanish from spit either. : )
But they prefer not to on their home soil. That would shatter their illusions."
That's a fitting reminder of the people killed at an anti-French protest in the Ivory Coast.
Good point.
Did Chirac make any smart-ass statements about Hurricane Katrina?
Amen! And some follow Jesse "Shakedown" Jackson and slippery Al Sharpton method of claiming poverty and poor opportunities as an excuse to break the law.
