10 Officers Shot as Riots Worsen in French Cities

10 Officers Shot as Riots Worsen in French Cities By CRAIG S. SMITH PARIS, Monday, Nov. 7 - Rioters fired shotguns at the police in a working-class suburb of Paris on Sunday, wounding 10 officers as the country's fast-spreading urban unrest escalated dangerously. Just hours earlier, President Jacques Chirac called an emergency meeting of top security officials and promised increased police pressure to confront the violence.

"The republic is completely determined to be stronger than those who want to sow violence or fear," Mr. Chirac said at a news conference in the courtyard of Élysée Palace after meeting with his internal security council. "The last word must be from the law."

But the violence, which has become one of the most serious challenges to governmental authority here in nearly 40 years, showed no sign of abating, and Sunday was the first day that police officers had been wounded by gunfire in the unrest. More than 3,300 vehicles have been destroyed, along with dozens of public buildings and private businesses, since the violence began.

"This is just the beginning," said Moussa Diallo, 22, a tall, unemployed French-African man in Clichy-sous-Bois, the working-class Parisian suburb where the violence started Oct. 27. "It's not going to end until there are two policemen dead."

It would seem to me those rubber rounds out of a garden variety shotgun take the fight out of just about anybody.

You have to admit, small, highly mobile units rolling up to knots of malcontents, and pelting the hell out of them would lead to the future belief it wouldn't be hard for the authorities to deploy such forces on short notice.

No annoying martyrs, either. (or at least very few)

Agree...sure like the water cannon myself, fires a ball of water big enough to knock a man off his feet 50 yards away and contains a colored dye that marks the POS for months, making arrest easy later when things cool down.....That's what the USAF used in the 70's for riot control....the flightline crash trucks water cannons filled with dye.....

Made the reds blue.......;o)

Short of that I'm with bear in the posts above......kill em , send the ultimate message.

I'm outta hear now......nite all !

Stay safe !

Do you really think Deep Blue America is any more American than these French? This could absolutely happen in the blue zones here.

See where we had violent riots in the past. It wasn't in the barrios, it was in da ghetto.

When the truth can be faced, these problems can be solved. They aren't solved by the nauseating and self-destructive pandering of Karen Hughes and Condi Rice.

Apples and oranges. Those riots were not part of a global terrorist movement. The riots in France are but a link in the chain of events that really began with the murders of the Israeli athletes in Munich, and the Achille Lauro, etc. When will the truth be tolerated? How many innocents will die before the world's democracies face reality, and start taking the appropriate actions?

Nonsense. We have far more to fear from the indigenous Riot Class than from muslims. So far this nonsense has not come close to the destruction and death unleashed by our own. Not even 1% of the destruction and death has occurred as happened after the death of MLK.

The french cops need to follow NYPD procedure in dealing with 22 year olds named Diallo.

It's official. This has become an asylum and the inmates are running it.
