President Bush -- too early to think about Mount Rushmore?

Posted on 11/06/2005 7:11:03 PM PST by BushPolicy

The rise of George W. Bush to the Presidency has been the stuff of legend. From the ashes of a "disputed" election that cast unfair aspersions on a well-deserved victory, we now live in a much different world from the one Dubya inherited in January of 2001, and it's not too early to assess his place in history. And as of right now, the only question seems to be: Great President, or the Greatest President in History?

President Bush has always had to face the distortions and unfair characterizations of the elite liberal media, and his astounding successes and reelection in the face of such a hostile press corp further underscores his greatness and the magnitude of his accomplishments. He has taken quite a bit of flack for relying on his gut and eschewing the advice of the striped pants boys and "experts" in the State Department. It should go without saying that when you have Christ in your corner and you rely on the Bible, you're in better shape than the secular elites who think they have everything figured out.

After inheriting a country that had been weakened by eight years of declining moral standards, a military used for social experimentation with alternative lifestyles than for defending and protecting our shores, and a previous administration too concerned with coddling tyrants than fighting terrorism, and corporations and the top earners burdened by excessive taxes used to funnel money to lazy and unproductive entitlement recipients, it was no surprise that our country was unprepared for the worst terrorist atrocity in U.S. history on September 11, 2001. From that day forward we saw without a doubt one of many of President Bush's finest hours, and where he began to undo the failures of the Clinton Administration. First, he demonstrated his sterling leadership by standing atop a pile of rubble and shouting words of solidarity into a bullhorn. Then, he had the courage to take the fight to the terrorists in Afghanistan, instead of firing a $10 million cruise missile into an empty tent to hit a camel in the butt. Whereas once Afghanistan was a poor, impoverished country beset by warlordism and the iron grip tyranny of the Taliban, elections have been held, Afghanistan is ruled by a Western-friendly president helping to modernize a backwater third world country, and millions of Afghanis are tasting freedom for the first time.

As smashing a success as Afghanistan was, President Bush knew that it was just one front among many in the new war against Islamofascism, and that in order to carry out his solemn duty to protect and defend the American people from further harm, it would be necessary to commit soldiers to battle against Iraq and its evil tyrant Saddam Hussein, who had GASSED HIS OWN PEOPLE and was plotting America harm, even if liberal critics obsess over the lack of weapons that have been found in postwar Iraq, forgetting that Saddam was an unstable tyrant and a weapon of mass destruction himself. No longer do the Iraqis live in the grip of fear and terror. They have held elections and are tasting the sweet nectar of freedom for the first time. American troops are steadily making progress so that Iraqis can stand up as we stand down. President Bush's greatest legacy is that he reversed the failed policies of the Clinton Administration, which resulted in September 11th, and in its place he is leading the United States to real peace, which is victory.

On the domestic front, the tax cuts have stimulated economic growth and helped usher in an ownership society. Despite the best efforts of liberal defamers to saddle Bush with "scandals" over the botched local and state response to Hurricane Katrina and the "crime" of talking to columnist Robert Novak, President Bush is riding high and has secured at the very least his place in history as a great President. The only question remaining is will he leap ahead of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Reagan in his remaining three years in office.

I strongly doubt the Moderator is going to "move to chat" or anywhere else on the advice of someone here.

Come on Black Tooth. You and I both know what it means to be a newbie.

Leave the poor newer newbie alone.

[Clarification:

The caption November 4, 1980 ... Morning in America ... reflects the correct date for the election of Ronald Reagan ... the image is actually from his first inauguration.]

To be honest, I'm not completely sure what that makes me.

It makes you a registered voter with an opinion. I remember well when you first came to FR. You are a definite keeper. :o)

I am not sure why I get the tough call here, I like Bush and would appreciate sincere statements of admiration for the President.

You seem to be quite unhappy with the president.

You're very kind.

There are terrific people here, including you LV, and as long as I don't have to enter a twelve step program, I'll be here.

I will always remember the kindness I was shown, and be slow on the trigger when it comes to the "not-so-obvious" zot-bait. Just in case. I may get played on occasion, but that way I will never turn away another "Freeper at heart."

Yes, I am down on the President right now. Nominating an unqualified person for the Supreme Court shook my faith in his judgement. Not standing up to the MSM and the Dems calling him a liar has upset me as well. There is no reason for him to be at 40% in the polls. He is the standard bearer for the conservative movement right now, and we need him to be a strong leader.
I believe he can and will stage a big comeback this Spring by combining tough spending cuts with tightened border security. Alito was a great start toward regaining the upper ground.

Some here seem to be paranoid about my conservative bona fides. It's been a mixed welcome.

... perhaps, it is because what you have written is too "pat" ... just pro-Bush platitudes strung together ... without an apparent sincere, original thought ...

Only time will tell ... and, admittedly, I got this treatment on one thread ... but, I am not convinced.

Another example of a seemingly inappropriate response is your faux "shock" when you say:

If that's a reference to what I think it is, GROSS! Would you say that in front of your mother?

It sounds too much like something a silly sorority girl in "Animal House" would say ... just doesn't ring true for someone who would be attracted to Free Republic ...

... but, if you are legit ... more power to you for sticking it out and responding ...

I agree 100%. Bush can do something to go down in history as a great president if he does something good in regards to illegal immigration, and finally decides to do something about spending.

Well, the vast majority of people on here are pretty conservative, so what's the problem with writing what you want. Where are these rules anyway? Etched in stone somewhere and placed in the Ark? I've been here a while now, I wouldn't call myself a newbie, and I'm certainly not dumb. But, you Sir, are in fact a dumb ass. Have a nice day... :)

This is now the definite second cross zot in this thread originating from a suspect post.

This just seems really weird to me and highly unlike any thread I have seen here before.

I agree that here and there he's done some things that I don't like, but with his leadership in the War on Terrorism, he will go down in history as a great president,

The President's open border policy makes his "War on Terrorism," kind of hard to swallow when you live just inside the open back door. When he called the Minutemen "vigilantes," he made it pretty clear he has no desire to stop terrorists, or anyone else from coming across the border.

Oh, barf.

And I thought the daily picture-licking thread was the most liberty-demeaning thing on FR.

History is already proving Bush right on the war against terror. Witness the chaos in France. That is the fate of those who believe appeasement is the way to deal with Islam.

Unless I missed it, France was not even mentioned in the great Sun Morning talk shows. Such Silence by the media speaks volumes about Pres Bush.

My long-time wish: Dismantle the Statue of Liberty, put it on a ship and give it back to France. We can then wait to see if they give it a prominent site and include the message at the statue's base:

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

These lines were the ending of the poem, The New Colossus by Emma Lazurus, 19th C. American poet.
