France struggles as unrest spreads

Pressure mounted on French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin's government to move quickly to restore order as violence broke out in the suburbs of Paris for the seventh night running. The French government leader canceled a trip to Canada yesterday to tackle the spreading unrest in areas with large African and Muslim populations, and to quell a damaging dispute among his ministers over how to respond. Last night, youths went on a rampage in nine areas in poor suburbs ringing the French capital to the north and the east, setting on fire about 40 cars, two buses and trash cans, as well as causing damage to at least one school and a shopping center. Hundreds of police were deployed to control the disturbances, with some units diverted from a soccer match. One trade union representing policemen described the unrest as a "civil war" and called on Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy to impose a curfew in areas that have been affected by the violence to ensure that the violence did not spiral out of control.

This may ignite quickly if not extinguished soon.

Instead of seven or eight separate barrio riots there may soon come a night when 100 go off simultaneously all over Europe.

Could the riots in Paris be connected to the recent banning of the headscarf in France?

I have said from day one that banning the headscarf all over the West would be huge, and would bring the cockroaches out of the woorwork.

I don't know how France stops this without coming down like a ton of bricks. Do they even have a ton of bricks in France? Maybe they need to ask NATO to intervene...

That's one of the claimed excuses:

According to the BBC it's all about the 'headscarf ban'.

They've had riots for how many nights now and they're still trying to decide whether or not to establish a curfew?

I am sorry to day, but the French deserve this wake up call. As for the Muslims, they are worhipping Satan because they are definitely not worshipping the true God.

Maybe they could borrow a ton out of Iraq's 500 tons of unenriched uranium and make bricks. Iraq's not using it...

President Jacques Chirac said the law must be enforced firmly but "in a spirit of dialogue and respect"

Negotiating with rioters on task to "fight police." That'll work.

"In the day, we sleep, go see our girlfriends, play video games," the young man continued as a half-dozen youths nodded. "And in the evening, we have a good time: At 9 p.m., we go and fight the police."

The nanny state at work...

If these "young men" were actually hungry they might just have something else to do during they day like work.

Instead the French pay them to riot and destroy other peoples property...

Don't dare say that to a card carrying soldier in the bizarro liberal parallel universe army where reality is a figment of the imagination.
