WASHINGTON -- U.S. District Judge Samuel Alito's career "raises questions" about whether he would put legal principles ahead of partisan ideology as a Supreme Court justice, Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., said Monday.
"As I have said before, Justice (Sandra Day) O'Connor should be succeeded by a justice who, like her, will inspire our nation and embody the fundamental American values of freedom, equality and fairness -- someone who will put the principles of law ahead of partisan ideology," Landrieu said in a statement released shortly after President Bush announced Alito's nomination. "Judge Alito's career of accomplishment speaks to his experience, but also raises questions as to whether he meets this standard and possesses the qualities necessary for a member of the nation's highest court."
Landrieu did not provide specifics about her concerns about Alito. She did say that "the Senate owes the people a fair and thorough confirmation process."
Landrieu's assessment is noteworthy because she is a member of the so-called "Gang of 14," the bipartisan group of senators that brokered a compromise on Bush's federal court nominees and is likely to be pivotal in any close nomination fight.

Intentional. And she won't. It was an old trick long before Ayn Rand explained it in "Atlas Shrugged". Treat your audience like they're listening to a horror show on the radio: sow vague seeds of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt without giving any specifics so that each one can personally come up with their own horrors. Additionally, the issue cannot be debated or refuted -- we know how leftists hate debates and actual facts.
Maybe she'll threaten to punch out Judge Alito.

Who is Landreau representing in the Senate? Surely not Roman Catholics who agree with a genuine Roman Catholic, Judge Alito, in the matter of abortion. Is she taking communion? Who is her bishop?
To be completely fair, Justice O'Connor was one of the most scathing dissenters in the Kelo decision.
But your point is well taken.
A significant portion of her voting base has left the state and won't be returning so she's already vulnerable. She will be pissing off a lot of her remaining constituents if she goes along with the crackpot left and fights this qualified nominee. I suspect she'll realize those facts by the time the vote rolls around.
Why does anybody listen to this woman anymore? She's been exposed. There's no there there.
You would think of everyone in the Senate, this gal would be keeping a low profile right now... and for the rest of her short, unimpressive career.
Mary is putting an election target on her back with these partisan stupid statements. And now that 10,000 of her paid voters are displaced she'll be easier to beat.
With the current depopulation of New Orleans, I dont know if she could get re-elected. She's walking on very porous soil right now.
