LONDON - Malaria research accounts for about one-third of 1 percent of the total amount of money spent on medical research and development, even though it accounts for 3 percent of all the productive years of life lost to diseases, according to a report released Sunday.
The report, the first comprehensive analysis of malaria research funding, coincided with an announcement by the field's biggest private donor, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, of $258.3 million in new grants to accelerate the development of new drugs, a vaccine and better mosquito control methods.
"It's really a tragedy that the world has done so little to stop this disease that kills 2,000 African children every day", said Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates. "If those children were in rich countries, we would have headlines, we'd take action. We wouldn't rest until every child was protected." [MSNBC is a Microsoft-NBC joint venture]
Malaria causes an estimated 500 million bouts of illness a year, kills an African child every 30 seconds and costs an estimated $12 billion a year in lost gross domestic product.

Too bad this idiot doesn't spend the money on protecting his operating system from viruses!
"Want to eradicate malaria? Bring back DDT."
EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS when I read the title.
Countless millions have died in the name of enviromentalist nuts.
In unrelated news Bill Gates on Wednesday announced the release of Malaria 2.0 - twice as deadly in half the time (when you can get it to work).
So ultimate capitalist Gates is a liberal? I really didn't know.
When you have 45 bil it takes a lot of dough down the drain to "feel good."
Here was the first article from a quick Google:

I also remember reading an article where he was supporting the estate (death) tax. I recall a hint of the old 'entitlement mentality'
Here is a good one on the estate tax:

You are right. Those are typical liberal gestures.
Throwing money away at a problem with no effective solution in the planning state is, as you mentioned, the mother of all feel-good leftist gestures.
I never said liberals were smart. :-) After all, Stupid Ted Turner donated $1 billion to the UN, at $100 mil a year (wonder if he followed through?), and still got dumped by Hanoi Jane. When you have as much money as they do, gestures take on a different form. It gets lots of personal publicity and much adoration from the useful idiots plus a tidy tax write-off.
