"It's really a tragedy that the world has done so little to stop this disease that kills 2,000 African children every day," said Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates. "If those children were in rich countries, we would have headlines, we'd take action. We wouldn't rest until every child was protected."

As much as I loathe any Marxist 'Richest country in the world' crap, Its nice to see a liberal finally put their money where their mouth is. There is no question, what-so-ever in my mind that this money will be used far more efficiently than a US govt charity, and drastically more efficiently than a corrupt UN charity.

Tax relief, what a wonderful concept!

Want to eradicate malaria? Bring back DDT.

DDT was demonized by bad-faith science and railroaded by overzealous environmentalists.

Environmental extremism kills!

He should concentrate on filling in the many security holes in his software first!

Malaria research accounts for about one-third of 1 percent of the total amount of money spent on medical research and development, even though it accounts for 3 percent of all the productive years of life lost to diseases...

If malaria is underfunded by a factor of 10, what diseases might be sucking up the funding disproportionately to their incidence? Can anyone AID me in answering this question?

I suspect it would be easier to eradicate malaria than it would be to secure Windows! lol.

Uh, I'm not at ALL a M$ apologist. Just check my previous posts.

HOWEVER...

1. I'm pretty sure it's not an "either-or" situation, and

2. To their credit, M$ has come a looooong way in the past 2-3 years on this front. My income from spyware, hacks, etc has declined dramatically in the past 2 years.

If you wanna do a shot at M$ you gontta do it right...

$258 mil would buy a lot of DDT. South Africa has ignored the environmentalists and has seen dramatic results in the first year.

This is a typical feel-good leftist gesture.

$258,000,000 Buys a lot of DDT. He should deliver the aid in that form so they can landfill it (which they would) and show the world how much they really care about stopping malaria amongst their populations.

The aid given in cash ends up in the Swiss bank accounts of UN and national officials.

Nothing that a little DDT wouldn't solve.

"This is a typical feel-good leftist gesture."

A typical feel-good leftist gesture would be to do something like declare Malaria illegal, or have the UN pass a resolution expressing their disappointment with Malaria and it's human rights violations. ;) Throwing money away at a problem with no effective solution in the planning state is, as you mentioned, the mother of all feel-good leftist gestures.

That's just a fraction of the money MS spent on fighting Netscape.

You do know the Gates Foundation is a separate entity from MSFT, right?
