You insinuated anti-Meirs Freepers were letting others do their thinking for them and I replied that this was not a problem for anyone here.

Not firing....just wondering aloud. Perhaps, also, Judge Brown believes (perhaps strongly) that she should stay in California...perhaps believes that she needs to continue to hold sway over those courts, as well?

I think it is AWESOME that he picked a friend of Specter -- doesn't get much better than that when Alito is a conservative. Maybe the support for Specter will now be seen by the conservatives in PA slightly different.

Spending, for one thing. I don't recall reading him increasing the funding of a tarnished institution like the NEA for another. While arguably more conservative than Bush in many ways, JFK isn't conservative enough either.

Don't get me wrong. Bush, as things stand now, is the most successful wartime president in US history: liberating more people and land with such comparably low fatalities [even the 'unconquerable' Afghanis]-- that's a major accomplishment. It would take over 40 years to reach Vietnam level fatalities.

At the same time, we need to look hard at how the 2000 primary was hyjacked, or the same thing will happen in 2008. But who realizes we were hyjacked?

An unquestionably qualified nominee.

Arlen Spector looked sick at the Senate introduction of the Judge and mumbled something about "lots of paperwork".

In fact he looked about as pleased as Harry Reid.

Arlen needs to feel the heat.

I know and so did David Boren!

BTW, our team has grown up -- first win in NE in 18 years.

Maybe it's the time change, but did you just say that no one here has a problem with others doing their thinking for them?

I would have preferred someone other than a "government" lawyer/judge but I am sure he could have made a worse pick. I'm just disappointed he couldn't find a qualified woman. But the fact that Harry Reid isn't happy is a good thing.

"uber-right"

Definition: What a lib or closet lib "moderate / independent" calls an ideological / social / fiscal conservative that represents the majority of the American people, in a vain attempt to make liberals appear as though they are not as small of a minority on the fringe left, and make conservatives appear as thoug they are a not as large of a majority of the American people. See also; disconnected from reality.

and he's only 19 years old. That gives him at least 60 years on the court. (grin)

Seriously, best of luck to him.

Do you really believe those who disagree with you can't think for themselves, but those who endorse whatever the President does are thinking for themselves?

If there is any RINO trouble at all we must put pressure on the dissenters, instead of concentrating most of our criticisms on the majority leader.

I agree.

Absolutely -- we are part and parcel of the grassroots movement in the GOP that sent Dr. Tom Coburn to the Senate.

I supported Miers on the grounds that a "stealth" conservative was the only way to get a true conservative approved by THIS Senate. I trusted the President when he said he knew Harriet Miers personally, and her journey through life had made her into someone a person like ME could support.

Alito does not seem to be a "stealth" candidate, so we're about to find out if the stealth strategy is really necessary.

If he's really conservative, the left will attack him with every bit of slime they can manufacture. Republicans were guilty of using the same kind of smears just one week ago.

Moral outrage when the low blows start is going to sound kind of hollow when it's Ann Coulter or George Will trying to call "foul". You can bet the ranch it will be more difficult to defend Alito NOW than it would have been if we had not thrown away the moral high ground.

I love this pick -- do you think we are going to get dissenters on here now -- if we do, we sure know which way they lean -- LEFT!

LOL....... It certainly will be interesting to see how the Senate aligns on this nominee. I think he was confirmed by a 99-0 vote for the 3rd Circuit when the democrats had control of the Senate if I'm not wrong. The democrats will make a lot of verbal noise but we'll have to see how they finally come down on a vote.

It will also be interesting to see how some of the more liberal GOP senators come down, such as those from Maine, etc. I think Specter in the end will support him fairly strongly based upon him being a 3rd circuit judge and his remarks early today. With some 300 opinions and some 3,000+ decisions he has a large paper trail to examine so that shouldn't be an issue.
