WASHINGTON - Rebounding from the failed nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, President Bush is poised to select between two of the nation's leading conservative federal appeals court judges - both experienced jurists with deep backgrounds in constitutional law - for what promises to be a bruising Senate confirmation battle.
With an announcement expected Sunday or Monday, administration officials have narrowed the focus to Judges Samuel Alito of New Jersey and Michael Luttig of Virginia, sources involved in the process said. Both have sterling legal qualifications and solid conservative credentials, and both would set off an explosive fight with Senate Democrats, who are demanding a more moderate nominee to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

any comments?
As a half-Italian attorney who practices in NJ, my pick is Alito :)
It was. We have moved on.
Miers was not an "abomination", even if picking Miers arguably was. She is a fine lady and doesn't deserve the ad hominem slimes and slanders that some unprincipled critics indulged in.
you are fast
Both of those would be fine as well.
Reh, Heh... Reeeeaaaallllyyy? I had heard it would be quick but that's sooner than I expected.
Lets not forget that the administration has floated names as a red herring just to get the Left off balance, like the case with Judge Edith Brown Clement being reported as a done deal just before Roberts was announced.
Huh??? Baby chickens are allowed????????
;)
'' Thought the pick had to be a chick''.... Nope that was just Bush trying to play nice with the RATS.......hopefully I think he's gotten over it......
Nope ...Laura doesen't get to choose this time.
How do you think he'd compare to Alito? One big thing I'm curious about are things like WOT-related matters - presidential powers and surveillance powers and things like that. Does anybody know of any indications one way or the other?
I kept hearing about Clement right before he announced Roberts. There was so much talk about her in New Orleans that I was shocked he announced Roberts.
How about Ted Olson?
Butter the popcorn, there is going to be a brawl and we have ringside seats! Watching them go nuts will be as enjoyable as the moral victory.
Whoever he picks, I think he ought to walk in with Barney first...just to see how many people he frightens to death before he waves the nominee in.
(One of the Old Guard caisson horses in Roman tack might be fun too, but bringing one of those into the West Wing corridors might be a tight fit.)
On second thought, he needed only to consult with Ann Coulter.
Specter will support Alito.
If true then Byrd, Nelson and every red state Democrat up for election has no choice to vote for him or face their gun owning constituents
