Miers hitting the books in advance of confirmation hearings (Bork lessons were learned...)
Mercury News ^ | 14 Oct 05 | RON HUTCHESON

By the time Senate hearings start in late October or early November, Miers will have completed a crash course in constitutional law.

White House officials and others who are familiar with her preparations said she'd paid little attention to the furor over her nomination while concentrating on the task at hand. They dismissed speculation that she might heed calls from some conservatives for her withdrawal.

Supporters expressed confidence that Miers' appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee will quiet critics who question her qualifications for the nation's highest court. But they acknowledged that any embarrassing mistakes by the nominee could doom her chances.

"One thing that characterizes Harriet is that she is extremely diligent. She's going to be prepared," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a committee member. "The temptation will be great for some to try to match wits with her on constitutional issues. There's some danger that senators might demonstrate not her lack of knowledge, but their own."

Although Miers is still in the early stages of her preparation, plans call for her to participate in question-and-answer sessions with top constitutional lawyers after she digests the briefing books. Those informal sessions will evolve into more formal "murder boards," relentless grillings that more closely resemble confirmation hearings.

Roberts wasn't videotaped during his practice sessions, but Miers might be. Some White House officials worry that her quiet, low-key approach may need to be pumped up for television.

"A good performance by her in the hearings will seal the deal," said Washington lawyer Christopher Bartolomucci, another participant in Roberts' preparation.

By all accounts, Miers is well aware of the stakes.

"She knows the hearings are an important part of the process," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. "She'll be ready."

I should think that she will acquit herself well. After all, she was charged with vetting all Judiciary nominees and does have a solid background. Watch for the trick questions though - A rerun of the 'Paper Chase' perhaps?

Too little too late for me. She should step down.

--- after she digests the briefing books -----

What a disgrace. A conservative President nominating a constitutional law light weight.

Can you imagine anyone having said this about Roberts?

The problem for Roberts was in finding people equally or more intelligent to question him.

Well this is good, it shows she is taking the matter very seriously. She's boning up as if she was going to face 100 Judge Borks, when actually it will be more like appearing on the Howdy Doody show.

Great - a cram course in how to say absolutely nothing.

She'd do better going door-to-door in the Senate with her shoeshine kit.

Bush has really boofed it this time.

She might do well to realize she doesn't have to give an answer to everything right there on the spot. "I'll get back to you on that tomorrow" would be wise words, especially when the Clowns are blowing gas out their keisters.

THAT she doesn't need. Apparently she's very good at it already.

Can you imagine anyone having said this about Clarence Thomas ?

Actually I can imagine it very well, because it WAS said about Clarence Thomas at the time of his nomination -- by DEMOCRATS.

And it was said by the whine and cheese set at National Review, though NR did tepidly support the Thomas nomination.

Clarence Thomas is one of our best justices, despite the apparent lack of a 'lifetime' of drilling in constitutional law prior to his nomination.

I believe Miers will turn out to be another Thomas.

Interesting. Prior to the nomination, we were told by many that choosing the right person for SCOTUS this was the most important decision bar none. Now it's she'll do just fine, our panties are in a wad, it's really no biggy, and well just have to see how it goes.

Interesting thread the other day, when Buchanan wrote about the implied sexist statements regarding those that opposed this nomination. Yet all the qualified male candidates, those with proven track records, were completely passed over.

Sexist indeed.

Would she be my first choice? Maybe not, but she is not deserving of all the garbage being tossed her way.

Ah, but my good Sir - 'tis said that she handles snakes well!

Soon we will see if that Lamestream source meant legless snakes or merely spineless snakes. ;-)

Biased Mercury News reporter: "Miers will have completed a crash course in constitutional law"

Mulch: Nothing more needs to be said.

So you buy into the leftist media's rote spin.

Who says Miers even needs a "crash course" in constitutional law -- besides you and this reporter?

My guess is, Miers is quite well versed in constitutional law, having done a huge amount of preparatory work with President Bush's previous nominees to the federal courts.

If she's boning up now in preparation to face hostile questions (and trick questions regarding abstruse and obscure cases) from the Senate committee, that's to be expected. Any other nominee would be, and should be, too.
