Abdullah (SAudi King): Al Qaeda is 'madness and evil'
CNN ^ | Oct. 14, 2005 | ABC News

Posted on 10/13/2005 9:45:38 PM PDT by FairOpinion

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia called the threat of al Qaeda in his country "madness and evil," and vowed to ABC's Barbara Walters that his nation would "eliminate this scourge" of terrorism.

In his first interview since becoming king following the July 31 death of his half-brother King Fahd, Abdullah vowed continued support of the U.S.-led war on terrorism.

Abdullah also defended women's rights, predicting women in the Muslim nation will drive in the future. He also discussed oil prices, relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States, and the potential for peace in the Middle East.

The interview will air Friday on the ABC News program "20/20" at 10 p.m. ET and "Nightline" at 11:35 p.m. ET.

I think Al Qaeda's days are numbered, as more and more Muslims are turning against them, and are no longer taken in by their propaganda.

Some day we might let them go out on their own. :\

Don't count on it. King 'Dullah is only concerned about Al Qaeda in his country. He has no problem with supporting them (people, and the ideology) abroad.

This is a BIG deal.

The rumors of AQ's death apparently are NOT exaggerated.

If only Barbara Walters weren't involved.

This guy is worth keeping an eye on. Now granted we are talking about Saudi Arabia, their human rights record is so bad there's no place left to go but up, still there are changes happening.

(snip)
Late last year when he was still only crown prince, Abdullah lent credence to speculation about his sympathies when he appeared at the funeral of Seyed Mohammad Alawi Al-Maliki, a non-Wahhabi cleric and leading Sufi teacher.

Al-Maliki, before his death, had been a prominent victim of Saudi repression; yet Abdullah praised him for his religious and patriotic fervor.

But aside from his reputed interest in Sufi mysticism, Abdullah had other incentives to follow a different road than that of his predecessor, King Fahd, and of Fahd's powerful brothers, Princes Sultan and Nayef. As Saudi defense minister, Sultan personally enriched himself on military contracts with the United States, and Nayef, the interior minister and an extreme Wahhabi, was the first leading figure in the kingdom to blame the atrocities of September 11, 2001, on Zionism. Fahd, Sultan, and Nayef were all members of the "Sudairi Seven," born of old Ibn Saud's favorite wife, Hussah bint Sudair. Abdullah, their half-brother, was outside the Sudairi circle.

Just sent an email to the Saudi Embassy asking for information about setting up a Church in the Kingdom.

If I get a reply I'll post it.

Abdullah's a survivor, and he wasn't the first choice of the Wahhabi. If now the family of Saud is being forced to confront the ones who helped them to the throne three quarters of a century ago, it isn't before time.

This may yet come down to a duel to the death between him and the Islamists. Those too quick to dismiss him as a faithless opportunist may not know all of the story.

Right on with that!

Al Quaeda and the Wahaabism sponsored by King Abdullah's gummint make a nice set of matching bookends. When he points at AQ, three fingers are pointing right back at him.

The leadership of SA knows that we have the military might to conquer them, and confiscate the oil, if we are forced to.

I believe this has been communicated to them.

Their compliance with our needs comes down to practical comparison of alternatives, not of any consideration of Moral "right and wrong."

Valin. Your wasting your time. I bet 95% or more of Freepers have no clue as to what those of the Sufi mystic sect even adhere to. But I appreciate what you posted.

"I am reading Louis Freeh's book. OMG."

Is it good? He was on the Tom Sullivan Show here in Sacramento this afternoon, and sounds like a reasonable guy.
