White House warns holdouts

White House officials have a message for conservative Republican senators who have expressed doubt about supporting Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers.

The West Wing types argue that she will turn out to be just as conservative as President Bush says she is, and voting against her would be an embarrassment over the long term. This message is intended for holdouts including Sam Brownback of Kansas, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

"If Miers is confirmed and she winds up being what the president says she is, Republican senators who voted against her will look quite foolish," says a GOP insider. This could cause a backlash against these legislators from conservative Bush supporters at the grass roots.

Presidential nominations are the product of voting him in. There are no consultations with the Ultra Ultras required by the Constitution to make them.

Originalists believe in sticking to what the Founders intended and they did not want the electorate involved. They placed the choice carefully and deliberately in the hands of the Executive with approval in the Senate.

Most people on the thread are not trashing her. It is a relatively small handful of whiny malcontents. Treason is as treason does.

The only thing that would be REALLY galling would be a Senator who voted FOR Ginsburg to come out against Miers and try to explain the higher scrutiny needed for a Bush pick over a Clinton pick.

You are asolutely correct. Two wrongs DO make a right.

Purely politically speaking, it would be foolish of the voters in PA to vote out Santorum. He would be the next Majority Whip, a very powerful position with great clout. In addition to that, if the GOP lost the majority as a result, their other Senator would lose his powerful committee chairmanships.

Not to mention the fact that Santorum has stuck his neck out for conservatives and taken the beatings from the press numerous times. Amazingly there are people on this forum that call him a liberal. Those people are simply too dishonest and/or too stupid to be listened to.

If Santorum is goofy enough to vote against this woman he doesn't deserve to be in the Senate. We need people there who will SUPPORT the President not undermine him kowtowing to a tiny minority. The Nation must prevail in this war and those who undermine our leader in this fight are acting against the National interest.

But he won't he is a smart guy and a true conservative.

Agreed. And I don't hear anyone here suggesting we overthrow the Constitution or even amend it to make democratically elected justices.

But we can express our disapproval when the Executive does something stupid.

Yep, even were our nominee defeated, we could have run the entire 2006 election on those grounds. I saw nominate the entire list of conservatives and force the Dems and RINOs to vote them down. We'd have turned the entire base out in passionate, firey intensity on a unifying principle. It worked like gangbusters in limited use in 04 (Thune anyone?). Now we get to run on current policy and Miers. As you can see, the base is pumped about it. Sigh.

Or too hard headed.

Great passion can cloud good judgement.

Well you know how genteel those GOP mutinies are. A raised eyebrow is serious disagreement.

Yep...but at least I didn't expect any better from this president. He's given plenty of warning that he's not a conservative, so I didn't have much hope.

Well mon..as I said the other day....

The confirmation would appear to be a done deal...they counted the votes...WH knows shes in. They can afford to be cocky and confrontational...Harry and his boys will make sure she gets enough democrat votes to put her over the top.

After all...the dems want her on the court now more than ever...shes damaged goods. And they'll use her down the road when the time is right.

I doubt they even need Coburn, Brownback, or Santorum as votes...but I guess they dont want it to look too arranged.

Yes sir...the 'coming out party' has begun.

Next up....IMMIGRATION.

Cute. I will repeat what I said to you in my earlier post. And then that is the last time I will communicate with you as you are annoying and somewhat crazy:

"Honestly, your posts on this thread are so over the line that I suspect you think you are being funny. On the other hand, I fear you are not."
