White House warns holdouts

White House officials have a message for conservative Republican senators who have expressed doubt about supporting Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers.

The West Wing types argue that she will turn out to be just as conservative as President Bush says she is, and voting against her would be an embarrassment over the long term. This message is intended for holdouts including Sam Brownback of Kansas, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

"If Miers is confirmed and she winds up being what the president says she is, Republican senators who voted against her will look quite foolish," says a GOP insider. This could cause a backlash against these legislators from conservative Bush supporters at the grass roots.

Don't worry...the Bushbot RINOs will continue to throw those arguments around until they need our conservative votes

You are not a conservative. You are simply another Bush hater out for a scalp.

I allow leeway that even good men can royally screw up.

This is why I continue to hold out hope for this President and this administration. I'm hoping they'll come to their senses. And, no, I don't even mean pulling the nomination per se. Rather an acknowledgement their character attacks were out of line.

But if that doesn't come, my respect of him and this W.H. will depart. I won't cheer that day, it's actually depressing to think of it.

IMO, he needs to get down on his knees and have a long chat with the One above.

You are not drinking kool aid, dude. You've been dropping acid. Mona Charen is evil? Brett Bozell is evil? Mark Levin is evil? Phyllis Schlagly is evil? If you think that, you have some severe psychiatric issues that need urgent treatment

The only one of them I see posting here attacking Harriet Miers is you. You must be legion.

Try it. Explain the aid and comfort you give to the enemy by attacking Harriet Miers.

Sometimes I feel po'd at the President in general. The way he handled the government give-away after Katrina, the illegal immigration flow he refuses to stem, the really dank stench of cronyism that surrounds all of his latest nominations (be it Miers, or Mike Brown or whatnot).

Still, I REFUSE to say a bad word against Ms. Miers (all I can say is that I have a queasy feeling about her, but we'll see how this unfolds). But I can EASILY see how a lot of people will want to scream bloody murder after all of the crap we've had to endure from a "conservative" such as our President.

Still, you know what? I give thanks every day that Sen. Kerry or Mr. Gore were not elected. Could you IMAGINE how they would have replaced a reliable conservative like Justice Reinquest? Boggles the mind!

Always be thankful for what you have IMO. And I pray that Ms. Miers if confirmed is a good Justice.

Well, they already have achieved "foolish" seem to be shooting for asinine.

Also, I long for the days when being a political insider used to be considered a bad thing by conservatives.

How times are a changing. Its getting hard to tell Ann Coulter from Alan Colmes these days.

I couldn't agree more on all three statements.

Unforunately the Ann Coulter comparison ot Alan Colmes rings all to true.

Ms. Miers will either stand on her own at the hearings or not. Then the votes can be taken yes or no. We should direct the anger where it belongs. To the RINOs. Support conservative candidates in '06 and '08, insist on them.

What about the disagreement with Bush about the Harriet Miers nomination, by non-evil people?

"If Miers is confirmed and she winds up being what the president says she is, Republican senators who voted against her will look quite foolish,"...

Not only is this baloney but this kind of rhetoric from the White House and it's supporters is really berginning to piss me off.

This isn't about reservations. This is about an evil attack on Harriet Miers by evil people.

I just have to laugh.

My family and I have prayed for this president every day for five years. He is apparently taking a very dark path. We will continue to pray for him. His WH is dividing his party,

That's the funniest accusation I've seen today.

Miers isn't a known constructionist, so we, who don't support her, aren't conservative. Guess with that reasoning we aren't conservative if we....don't like over spending, don't like welfare, don't like tax hikes, don't like land grabs, don't like....

Guess McCain is conservative for you. By the way, he'll love Miers.

"This isn't about reservations. This is about an evil attack on Harriet Miers by evil people."

Who is evil AF? Rush, Robert Bork, Laura Ingraham, National Review, Peggy Noonan, Grover Norquist? After you get through excising the names as evil, you don't really have a literature for a movement anymore.

Or perhaps it's the voters themselves, who are exterting pressure on these figures. These "evil" people constitute the margins of victory in elections without which Bush is not president and we are not the majority party in either House. Again, there is no winning for winning.

I have no problem with disagreement. It is the evil and relentless attacks by people who purport to be conservative or patriotic. They are fey. Harriet Miers would not be my first choice but I'm not the President. It is his responsibility to make the nomination. I support him and her now.
