MIERS & LAST-MINUTE DROP-OUTS (Priscilla Owen did not withdraw her name)
National Review Online: The Corner ^ | 10-12-2005 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

MIERS & LAST-MINUTE DROP-OUTS [Kathryn Jean Lopez] A journalist friend just spoke with a top Texas lawyer who spoke with Priscilla Owen last week. He says that she "most emphatically" did not withdraw her name from consideration to the Court. If the White House spin is that Harriet Miers got the job because nobody else wanted it, it would seem that the White House is at a desperation point. Posted at 12:07 PM

Some of my clients refer to me "Tom Hagen".

Vito did not appoint Tom as the next Don.

Could you imagine next GWB picks his personal CPA to be Fed Chairman?

I'm on record here as saying I actually thought it was going to be Callahan, who I think Novak tarred unfairly as a liberal in his column the other day (it's not clear where she stands on the social conservative issues like abortion, etc., but on law and order issues, which are a big deal for me, she is REALLY strong). I thought I saw a blurb somewhere the other day that she was reportedly the runner-up to Miers for this pick.

Desperation??? Dragging Laura out to try to calm the waters was a shameful thing, now to say everyone else quit is desperation indeed.

I don't know, the way No. 1 son (he's 11) behaved last night, I might be willing to give up his head and several other assorted and attached parts. :)

Too bad the spineless RINO's wouldn't support her...

Pure speculation. They did before.

"So either James Dobson lied or Carl Rove lied."

Rove's statement was vague but designed to give that as a possible impression. Dobson did not lie,...but I think he should inveigle himself in internal Washington pr wars.

The wingers and their unnamed sources...... LOL

Well 54% of conservatives say she should be confirmed and only 9% say no.....

Not really.

She just managed to bask in the reflected glow of Al Gonzale's tenure as White House Counsel.

Priscilla needs to "shut up" before they sick Lindsey Graham on her! Thou shalt not make the White House look bad!

"Oh, I support President Bush wholeheartedly! He is the greatest President Ever! All who question HIS decisions must be BANISHED from the Kingdom...er RNC!"

(sotto vocce)"So, can I be on the Supreme Court now, too? Huh? Huh?"

Nah...no Cronyism here...or toadyism for that matter...just ask Andy Card!

I don't like the idea of quotas for the court, but as I said earlier this a.m. in another thread, there's something to be said for not wanting Ginsburg, who IMHO is by far the most left-wing current member of the court, to be the only female face up there.

Chris, that's a darn good analogy.

You guys have aggressively argued that we should not "trust" George Bush, yet now we're supposed to "trust" this?

I trust this as much as I trust Rove's desperate attempt at damage control. Neither account is corroborated.

"The difference is my friend that we all know (and obviously have different opinions of GWB)"

The pro-miers spin wasn't coming from GWB though. It was being filtered through the media via other sources.

So, again, is that a good thing as long as it supports miers, but a bad thing if it goes against her?

The rapidly shifting standards this week have been astounding. And they seem to resolve not around principles, but personality.

LOL, so Rove has a conversation in private with Dobson. Wants Dobson's approval so the religious right will toe the line for the nominee. Specter threatens a subpeona and Dobson tells the truth to the public, as he SHOULD. The White House LIED to Dobson, expected it to stay confidential and none would have known better.

And I used to think Rove was a political mastermind. You don't LIE to a Christian man and expect him to continue lying FOR YOU!

Makes me sick on 2 fronts: 1 that the religious right is willing to support a nominee SIMPLY on the issue of abortion alone and 2 that the WH is so BLATENTLY using the religious right to forward their OWN agenda (which, btw is not a originalist agenda).

I'm sick about hearing about Mier's religion! And I'm an evangelical myself! Religion in and of itself is NOT a qualifier nor a disqualifier for the SCOTUS, imho...

If we get an originalist, we ALL get what we want in the end. Shortsightedness... good grief!

Bush had not obligation to meet with Democrats and RINOs for advice on who to pick.

I think Bush should listen to the people who elected him.

"Priscilla Owen!"

"Janice Rogers Brown!"
